Were Madness the best singles band ever?

Thought I was on my own with this one. Yep, novelty act...might as well have worn clown outfits. Suggs, you're a nice bloke but you cant sing, you talk, you have no range...it's a durge.

I feel better now....thanks marra 👍
I thought the boomtown rats were the same, clever university types masquerading as from the street and being the voice of the street. Couple of decent tunes but not really a punk/new wave band for me.

Man, we were seperated at birth, I tell thee...I didn't think they were much either. I'm hoping you also dislike SAW stuff...I was there at the birth, and I said of my friends new style: "It's mindless contrived pap, but I know you'll sell it"

Stock Aitkin & Waterman. Unforgettable....unfortuneately :D

Ah of course - not my cup of tea mate same rhythm track for every song but they had some good pro acts so not going to slag it off. It’s hard enough to make a living in music so fair play if you make it work.

My debut CD (with the missus) is out in early August...It's called 729 emotions. Considering your immaculate musical taste, you'll probably pre -order :D

I can't stand Madness. Always came over as a novelty act to me, and the people who likes them always seemed to be the thick as shit, easily pleased types. Also, Suggs supports Chelsea. Nothing to like there.
Tbf they sometimes wrote some good ”kitchen sink drama” lyrics…..a little like Squeeze but not as clever….but the music that went with those lyrics was generally mundane ska pop

Absolutely! The songwriting mate I mentioned earlier was a friend/contemporary of SAW and had happily (almost) retired in Thailand when they started raking it in. He actually came back to the UK for a while to have another go but I think he basically cared too much about his craft to follow their example and returned to Thailand to lounge about in royalties-funded luxury!

I have a mate who was close to stardom, untill he suddenly wasn't. He was on mainstream Uk TV but this business can be rather cruel.

He gets machanicals, but its pennies and actually a bit of an insult.

On line streaming might help Ed Sheeran or Taylor Swift who don't need it but for lesser known songwriters the returns are terrible.

@mux - have your band recorded anything or been in a studio?

A lot of my mate's stuff was VERY 70s which sometimes worked in his favour when getting used in ads and soundtracks, as well as having been from a time when singles sold in huge numbers. He produced a lot of the songs he wrote so had twin revenue streams, and also managed some of the acts (Billy Ocean, Nolans, Dooleys.....).

About 10 years ago he said that 'Love Really Hurts Without You' alone was still bringing in £40,000 a year! His income had also had a big boost from the Far East where the Japanese and Korean markets, which they had never managed to crack back in the day, were now using his stuff in ads and jingles.

With the current band we have recorded a showreel which is the one on our Facebook page but that was before we had ever even done a gig, it was just to send to venues to get gigs.

We have another one booked for a few weeks time since it's been a few years.

We are a cover band though so obviously aren't looking to be famous.

I just wondered if you had ever had a day in a studio - it can be really good working with a good pro to help your sound.

Yeah when I've recorded something with a previous originals band. Not for a long time now though. I know the lads who run Motorhouse in Sunderland so we would use that place if any.

Yet, amazingly, only 3 Number 1s (can you name them without Googling?).

Also the 3rd British band to be inducted into the Rock & Roll Hall Of Fame.

Both facts I learned at the Ould Rockers Music Quiz at the Mean Eyed Cat last week!
