Racist Sportsmen or just daft young lads

None of those would raise any eyebrows if on whatsapp. Not many smiles either but they aren’t terrible.

I've said this already, but I'll say it again.
WhatsApp - Private conversation, which granted can get shared wider if someone is vindictive.
Twitter and other social media - put out to the public for EVERYONE IN THE WORLD to see.
If you pictured a black bloke then maybe you have the issue. It could easily just have been some white bloke coughing next to him on the train or something.

The colour of the person's skin is irrelevant. The point was he was making light of something that ended up killing over 11,000 people.
Would it have been any less offensive or more, if he'd said "The person next to me definitely has lung cancer"?

My point is they aren't really that bad. I wouldn't flicker if a teenager said any of those. They were bad jokes at worst.

If bad jokes were a crime most modern comedians would swing from the gallows.

Deary me you are a miserable sanctimonious get.

So f***ing what? Dark humour is how humans have coped with horrible things since time immemorial.

I'm very aware and have done so myself on numerous occasions.
However, I'm not a professional sportsman who has standards and conduct to uphold and am daft enough to leave my oh so witty banter from years gone by lying around for some vindictive tit to find and hoy at my boss

Hindsight is a wonderful thing. I do feel for him in a way because I know I've made some pretty crass jokes in my time. Not racist mind, but I know I've crossed many people's comedy threshold and I've felt bad if I've offended them without meaning to.

However, as I've said there, it's not beyond the wit of man to delete your social media. I've done it (apart from the ol' Gram) and I'm better off without it.
It has to be said, you've got to be a world class tool to go back into someone's tweets to find something defamatory.
Why even bring up the point then? Is it okay for you to do it but not a professional sportsman?

What bit of "code of conduct" did you miss?
I wouldn't say it's necessarily ok for anyone to do it, but the point is, when you're in the public eye, and particularly when you're in sport, it's expected that you are a role model.
You could argue that's unfair as it's "just a job", but it's clearly not. People put a lot of stock in them, and when they make a mistake, the effects are greater.
That's people for you I'm afraid.

Maybe, just maybe the sensible people in the world could just say this is nonsense

If the public (and sponsors) expect people to jump through hoops to satisfy this expected moral life they need to lead, then they do it. I find it a tad childish. Mary Whitehouse in a different guise.

How is it a problem for people to react to someone in the public eye making racist jokes? Albeit historic ones. (That's the issue I think)

I look forward to the next Twitterstorm
Over reaction is the problem. People are flawed and people make mistakes. Especially teenagers. Some people are racist. It shouldn't be a surprise.

If he was still making remarks like that, then there'd be more of an issue. Maybe he doesn't or maybe he just doesn't put them online.

You'd hope that it would be a case of "How stupid I was back then, sorry everyone. I wouldn't even think of something like that now" etc etc.
But for some people you can bet that won't be enough.

I just think people can be raging fannies about a lot of things that don't really matter.

Ollie has had his name dragged through the mud a bit but this will all die down soon enough and his career will progress unhindered. Warnings like this don't make him suffer but serve as a precaution for others who might follow his silly example.

It's just a fact of life that some careers carry sanctions that are different to others. He can go out tonight and shag a dozen escorts if he likes with no strings attached other than a bit of name calling and embarrassment. For a social worker that's your career finished. Just the way life is.

Social workers cannot consort with prostitutes?
