Racist Sportsmen or just daft young lads

Unfortunately like I say, once it's out there, it's hard to get it back, regardless of how long ago it was posted.
100% agreed but I think some slack should be given to tweets that were made a while back whilst a teenager.

I think the moral outrage is way over the top.

Me and the missus drummed into our daughter that everything she posts can be out there forever. She doesn't post anything anymore. Too cool.

How did someone find this ten year old post ?

What a dirty horrible little human being scrabbling around in the hope of finding some dirt.
It's quite easy, just search their Twitter name along with a racist a term and bang, you have it.

I searched my name with some racist terms just in case 10 years ago I did similar, I didn't but a mate of mine had done in a conversation with me. I've messaged him to take it down.

I don't do social media and am unconcerned about the thoughts and doings of sports personalities, pop stars and celebrities, so I have to depend on the judgement and opinions of others via the news when someone is accused of being 'phobic or 'ist'.

I'd like to know what was said so I can hopefully understand what all the fuss is about but never get to find out.
Whatever was said is deemed too evil to repeat, but I'd like to form an opinion rather than grabbing a pitchfork or flaming torch and joining the march to Frankenstein's castle on the say so of someone else.

Some of the jokes we told when I was young are understood to be inappropriate now, but they weren't said out of malice, more a matter of thoughtlessness and growing up in an insular culture.
It's a matter of education. We live and learn.

I think I'm just rambling here but most kids under 20 are daft anyway.
I was. Often full of meself and kna nowt with a penchant for shocking people.

Daft young lads. I was definitely a bit racist as young fella. Said things I wouldn't say now. Repeated jokes that would be classed as racist. It was the culture I went through as a young man (drinking/football/rugby/army/ladsladslads). Then grew up a bit and understood the world a bit more.
People shouldn't be hung out to dry for small mistakes made when they are young.
ECB have handled this so badly. A statement by the fella apologising, talking of regret and explaining to young fans why it's wrong should have been enough. And then stick by the lad as the press and certain sections will try to hammer him.

Brain doesn't fully develop until you are 25. Also, people are products of their environment and some people's childhood environments are a little toxic. Are people from racist families/neighbourhoods not allowed to succeed?

There is a bit of McCarthyism creeping into society, imho.
More than a bit I think . We're entering a period where we are expected to self govern and accept things as "a crime" that have never been so in the past . Thought crime essentially.
I've always been one of the first to jump on true racism and if the current climate can get me thinking it's going wrong there is a problem somewhere

Its 2021 and despite many liking to see themselves as tolerant, forward thinking, that people shouldnt be punished for mistakes etc etc and all those virtuous beliefs in truth we are a blood thirsty society and cancel culture is in full play atm.

The ECB would be totally crucified if they didnt hang Ollie Robinson out to dry here. They have been left with no choice.

I don't agree mate. Only the loopers would have been screaming for that. The vast majority would have settled for it. And you would still have had the loopers on the other side who wouldn't have even wanted the ECN to acknowledge it. So probably well balanced.

I never post on social media as I feel muzzled by the reaction of people who would take offence or the fact that nuance will be lost and also the fact some of my humour is not for public consumption. However, I am an adult male that has lived a little. A lot of 18 years olds don't give a fuck and their brains have not matured enough to have the same limitations on risky behaviour. Hence the do daft stuff.

Many teenagers will be unable to comprehend or even register your point. Unless the player is contracted to a side and has some contract that expressly forbids stuff then I think old tweets are off limits.
Agree 100%.... but, haven't you just posted on "social media" ?????

You're on social media now. You could 'like' a post on this thread which is OK in 2021 but unacceptable in 2031 and it could come back and bite you on the arse.

That was anti-racist.
Ok then, Porridge, It Ain't Half Hot Mum, Rising Damp etc. etc. All used fruity language, all were racist, sexist, homophobic by today's standards. Still entertaining though. Not that I've watched them all but Porridge is brilliant.

I think he’s an example of what education does. When he was young he was very naive, now he’s older it seems like he’s been educated through the years to know this is wrong

If I surprisingly make it to 2031 I couldn't give a monkeys what anyone thinks.
It'll be giving likes to that son of fun Space Hopper that does for me I suspect.

But isn't it concerning that we are seriously considering such a situation where we may be judged and condemned for anything or everything we've said, done or thought as the frequently changing zeitgeist dictates.
It's not only about re writing the past, but rewriting people's characters, lives and motives as they live - rooting them in a particular time of their lives, perhaps when they are at their 'worst', and denying any growth, change, or redemption.

Orwell has been quoted a lot on this
Who controls the past controls the future. Who controls the present controls the past.

or as Shakespeare wrote
To mourn a mischief that is past and gone
is the next way to draw new mischief on.

It amazes me to this day that anyone in the public eye hasn't purged their social media just in case someone goes back through it looking for something.
You tweet, FB or IG something and it's out there for the world to see.

I have a pal who paid a company to scrub his social media prior to going through the application process for a petty decent job.
