Working from home

That's one I have to do - I need to know nothing went wrong since I logged out, because if so I need to get straight to work to get myself up to speed before the 9am customer meetings start.

As workers, we all focus on the time and costs we save in commuting.
But nobody ever thinks about how these companies are saving a huge amount from being able to shut down entire offices.

I remember being told our desks were cross-charged to our team at about $1000/month.

Yet it took a year of pressure for them to even allow people to collect their chair so that they didn't have to sit on a dining chair / end of their bed to work. There'll be loads of back problems reported over the next 10 years because of unsuitable workstations over this last 18 months.
Then it is your job? If you have to be online if there are issues. I get that this isn't straight forward in all instances.

I'm curious as to what/if anything is waiting and look at emails early morning, but generally it can wait. If it is urgent I'd jump on and do something, same as I would've done had I been in the office. Would just start the day from home. Had I not checked, I'd not be aware....

Diference is, I have to be able to explain what happened, what the current situation is and be able to field questions by 9am.

So even if I was working from the office, I'd still need to check before I went in. OR I'd have to start an hour earlier.

Its a bit of a pisstake tbh.

I find people who do this make sure they ‘cc’ a load more people into the emails that are necessary, usually managers, just so they can be ‘look at me, I’m sending emails at 22:00’

I use the Delay Delivery option sometimes to send emails... it gives the impression I am busy when I've actually closed down an hour before...

I am in work currently, but we are not that busy - so much so that I am currently watching the cricket on my phone while browsing through the internet on my laptop........ NZ are 327/8 if anyone is interested

Not just Muslims, but I like working between xmas and new year sometimes. Shite weather f***ing dark all the time. Would rather take off other days
No that's right. I was just using an example. That said I gave him ample flex around Ramadan. Mutually agreed he'd come in late, leave early and it's use a couple of days leave. Same as it would if I had to take Xmas off.

Been almost exclusively homeworking for over a year now and have 1/2 days a month in the office or on site, meeting clients or contractors. Most people at my place are working to the same routine now and other people in my industry from other firms I've spoken to seem to think that'll just be the norm now, using the office a few days a month max as and when needed.

While working at home, as soon as it gets to 5.30 my work mobile is switched off and stays off for the whole evening on the desk, which I don't use at all until the next morning at 8.30/9ish.

If I was so busy that was having to send e-mails at 9 or 10pm, i'd be looking for a new job tbh. I noticed one in my inbox this morning that was sent close to 11pm!

I get the flexibility point, but even if that's genuinely the case just put a timer on the e-mail so it automatically sends first thing the next day. Same with people who send e-mails on Saturdays and Sundays etc.

This aye, no matter how important the person on the receiving end of the email is, chances are they aren't going to be stopping up waiting for something you've promised to get over by COB at close on say, midnight.

In the past when I've been in that position a few times I've just sent said email first thing in the morning because; a - if people see you sending emails late at night it's in effect a free pass for them to think you'll bend over backwards for them in the future, and b - chance of making a bollock up from not having proof read or comp checked something late on is bigger, just get up early the next morning have a final check then get it off. Looks a lot better anyway imo.

Been in a new job for four month now. Makes it a bit easier to set expectations, I was a lot more 'invested' in the last place.

Got a work setup in the spare room that gets switched off when I finish. I do get emails to my phone but there's a good Android app, Quiet, that lets you set times for them coming through, so they're off between 6pm and 8am.

With working from home all the time now I'm rarely back up at my desk on an evening cos I get sick of sitting in the same room. I'm probably working less hours over my regular now than at any point in the last 18 months.
