Haseeb Hameed

He is not a test standard bowler the England set up know that hence leaving him out.

His own county didn’t even want him.

Yeah nothing against his fighting spirit or that he is handy with bat,

Simply have the imo he is not a top class spinner.

He played in South Africa, all through the summer and then 3 of the 6 away tests this winter. From that it’s pretty clear England do rate him

I am not sure they do they dropped him in India even though they knew he had got wickets in Sri Lanka.

I suspect they knew against a better class of batsman he would struggle.

Jimmy Anderson was dropped by England early on his test career. Broad was dropped last summer.

He took 5 wickets in the first test against India

In all seriousness does anyone genuinely believe that Bess is a good test match spinner. Il use the benchmark of Swann as excellent, Tufnell good and Croft decent. I personally think Bess falls well below Croft. But it’s all opinion. Like I say I hope he develops and proves me wrong, but has poor control and does not turn it enough for me. The worst of both spinner worlds. I know he took wickets but if u watched the games and how he took them then u will know what I mean

He’s not a patch on Swann or Tufnell yet. But he’s a relative novice still. Swann didn’t make his test debut until he was 29 (albeit some of that was due to attitude apparently)

He's only 23 ffs. Swann didn't play for England till he was 29, only played because Monty was injured, and had an indifferent first season.

Tufnell was a passenger in the first innings and the worst batsman to play for England.

Took test wickets at 38. But he’s a bit of a lad so gets a pass it seems

couldn’t bat or field.

I don’t think anyone is trying to argue Bess is a top class test spinner. He’s got his limitations. But he’s done alright so far, and he’s a decent 8. As Giles was. He should aim to be our Vettori, a spinning all rounder.

If he gets anywhere near vettori then that would be amazing. Vettori massively underrated with bat and ball.

He’s a top class cricketer yeah. Bess currently takes his wickets cheaper than Vettori did for what it’s worth.
Can’t argue with stats. But my eyes suggest there is a big difference
Balance same test average as atherton is he as good!!

Funny how we didn't hear anyone complaining about Bess till he had a stinker in the second test at Chennai. Imagine if you'd written off Anderson at a similar stage of his career.
