Why can cats disappear for ages?

A couple of years ago our cat went missing around december time, i remember it was freezing outside, we had ice and bitterly cold nights for a period of time and after a couple of days/nights we started to get worried. He had never done this before. As a few days turned into a week we thought the worst, we were walking the streets at night after work, driving round and round in circles. Then a week was suddenly 3 weeks and still no sign. We were both gutted and thought he had either died or been hit by a car but due to the cold weather too, we had given up any hope.

This was now about a week before xmas and one morning my partner was going out to work and as she opened the front door, the cat walked in as though nothing was wrong, she was screaming, i didnt know wtf was happening but obviously over the moon. i dont know where he had been but we both suspect he has a second home as it has happened again since but only for a week the last time.

@Ceverton i hope your friends cat turns up but id tell them not to give up hope as apparently its very common for cats to go missing then turn up when you least expect it.
Really appreciate this mate, glad cat came back too. Will tell the owner of this story and it will give her hope.

It does show a difference between dogs and cats. Dogs need to be walked and brought home on a lead, where most stick close to their owners. Cats wander off on their own, doing their own thing for days or sometimes even years. It seems there are always posters around and posts on local neighbourhood pages about lost cats. Never anything about lost dogs. My dog is rarely more than a few feet from any of us.

A friend's cat has gone missing a week ago and not came back. They have rang everywhere and no cats found (dead or alive) that is him.

My friend is telling the kids that the cat has gone to his girlfriends (could have followed another cat on heat suppose) for a week.

BTW dogs > cats, I have never had a cat incase people think this is for me

A lad I used to work with got a rescue cat and she got out and went missing. He was living in Hett at the time.

2 weeks later he got a phone call from a vets in Prudhoe saying she’d been handed in there, a bit skinny but otherwise fine.

I've said it before but I just don't trust people who can come out with the statement 'I hate cats'.

I only let mine out when I'm in the house, and they are always in overnight. I whistle for them to come in. Been told I've got a very piercing whistle by my neighbour. 😁
What do you think about people who have “house cats”?I didn’t know what a house cat was till a couple of year ago.
You’ve got to be one mentality unhinged person to actively go out and buy a cat and torture it all it’s life by being cooked up in a house.Cruel bastards.
Probably a serial killer in the making.
Agree, closely followed by people who have a house cat

I'm in two minds about it. It's a big thing in America. My sister's cats are house cats but they've got a catio (have you heard of that? 😁 ) and they get walks on a leash. Because they've known no different they seem like happy and well stimulated cats. But keeping one and expecting it to be happy indoors can lead to behavioural problems too. I understand why hers are kept in - she lives close to a large roundabout and her previous outdoor cat was knocked down and killed there.

Personally I prefer to have indoor/outdoor cats. I live on a cul de sac and next to a dene, so quite cat friendly. I still worry when they are out, but would hate to deprive them. Nothing nicer than sitting in my garden enjoying the sun with the cats.

My pals parents have one of those like so can go outdoor but not properly out.

Patio had a gazebo put over it then covered in chicken wire so they cant get out.

Ours is a house cat and seems to enjoy it. We have a good sized outdoor area at the back so she goes out when we do, but usually just wanders back in after a sniff around while we are still out there. She's nearly 13 but has always been like this since a kitten. I'm definitely not a serial killer either. The nobs are the ones with dogs who let them off leads when they shouldn't be, or let the dogs run upto people assuming those people will like that. Only takes the person to lash out at the dog then who's fault is it?.
