He's been thrown to the lions since he joined, but then all managers under Ashley are the only regular line of communication from the club. So when the fans aren't happy, they have to face the firing squad, even when the fan discontent is about goings on away from the pitch.

He doesn't help himself though.
Yeah true. Not wanted from day 1 and every poor performance is then justification for the abuse. It reached fever pitch earlier this season before the current rot set in. In a world of us apparently more concerned with mental health, it seems those rules don't apply to managers. In truth most people think he's a shit manager who should be nowhere near the top level, but he never had a chance.

Tbf, I didn't know that. When ?

Look at all the upset Hall, Shepherd and esp Fletcher caused as soon as a bit of "success" was achieved with bonds, platinum clubs etc. Some of the loyalest of their fans were treated shamefully and iirc, it lead to some back tracking.
Showed a lack of class and appreciation imho.

Is that vastly different from any other club?

Do other chairmen address fans regularly? I can't think of many. Do other clubs have regular lines of communication other than from the manager?

Oh come on...
Rafa gets a carte blanche because he was very successful elsewhere. To your mob, Rafa was the start of the good times at Newcastle. If he did well it was his tactical genius, if he did badly it was Ashley's fault for not investing, and even when he did spend... Rafa made some crap buys

Your fans would not have accepted it from a decent middle of the road manager. But because Rafa came with pedigree at bigger clubs and said the right things you all swallowed it up. If Bruce had said Rafas exact words, you'd still hate him

You hated him before he had even taken charge... because you couldn't use him to prove you are a "big club". Which is all that really matters to Newcastle fans
A decent, middle of the road manager like Glenn Roeder or Chris Hughton?

Was there a "we go" campaign for either of them?

Does your trust mention either of them in its promo video?

No. Because they weren't high profile enough for the club. Yet both were better for Newcastle than Benitez was

Nah sorry that's a load of tosh mate. We've always enjoyed the stars and big names, like any club, but we love a good grafter too, on or off the pitch.

Souness was high profile and we hated him because he was a whopper. Dalglish the same.

Also, I think all three Roeder, Hughton and Benitez did great by the club and I'd happily buy any of them a pint (Roeder's passing was particularly sad).

The We Go campaign was the culmination of 14 years of frustration. Did we appreciate Rafa's pedigree? Of course. Who wouldn't? And when cast alongside our recent managers (McClaren, Carver, Pardew) he represented a consistency we vitally needed to improve. He was a chance to genuinely start getting some consistency and foundation. Even under Pardew were a bit rollercoaster. He also wanted to involve himself in every aspect of the club. Say what you want about Benitez tactically - he definitely frustrated me during the Championship season, but achieved his goal - he is a fantastic details man.

Ashley eroded trust with the fan base himself. He did it the way he sacked Keegan, the lack of communication, the countless issues elsewhere. He might say he did all he could to keep Benitez, but when I'm presented with a choice of believing Benitez, or the man who has done nothing but lie through his teeth for 14 years I'm going to pick the manager.

I love my club, so I wouldn't walk away when Rafa did, but I totally understand why he did.

Aye. When I don’t get paid what I want, I fuck off anarl.

The only reason he left was ££££

Surely not. Rafa loved the club and wanted a project. I'm sure his pledge to the trust is in the post right now.

Sad fact is few managers or players truly love a club or hold any loyalty to it anymore. As soon as a better offer comes along, (like most of us) they're off.

Newcastle fans backed themselves into a corner when they laid down the hero worship for Rafa. They set themselves an agenda that he was something he wasn't, and when he didn't deliver.... they couldn't change the tune.

What’s he said to the trust?

I need to see this

I mean, ok, let's play it that way.

If you had his career, then took that job, delivered what was asked, wouldn't you expect a raise? We know he wasn't asking for £12m. The problem Ashley has is that he made all of these statments in public about giving Rafa every penny the club makes. That's before we go into the talk of us botching a deal for Tammy Abraham only to end up with Joselu etc.

The same Pardew who did a better job?

So if Bruce delivers what was asked (survival, after all that's all Ashley's interested in, according to every mag on here) then big Steve should expect a pay rise, right?
