Betfred: Blackjack player wins £1.7m jackpot after High Court battle

I wonder what the glitch was 🤔 was it simply a glitch that it was programmed never to let someone win that amount ?
A glitch in the software is of course always possible. However, the liability of that glitch does not reside on the person playing the game. They register, agree to the T&Cs and play live. If it’s found that the person winning has been partner to the causing of the glitch, the company would have had a proper case. The participant played the game in a fair manner in this case, the company agreed to take his money and let them play. After the matter they discovered an issue that had nothing to do with the individual who was willing to participate and attempted to retrospectively cancel his gaming.

This is a very important verdict. Hopefully it will show a lot of people how these companies are not the “fun”, “just a few quid on a weekend whilst out with the lads”, “whey, it’s all a laugh” type of organisations. They are brutal.

The mods on here do a good job in removing betting content from the football threads in this respect. Personally I think it’s a mugs game. If you like a dabble, fair enough, but remember there are impressionable people who will read your tips and predictions and could get hurt.

Good for him.
I can totally see how it would have affected his mental health - battling big companies must be awful.

Hope the money makes up for it.
Inadvertently watched a really good film about the bloke who battled Ford and other companies after they stole his idea for intermittent windscreen wipers.
Took a lot out of him and about 12 years of his life representing himself from memory.

Great outcome. Horrendous industry, need to be reigned in across the board.

Agree. All these companies are just as bad. Need to be banned from tv, social media and sporting events. There is nothing glamorous about gambling.
If you google online bookies scams it's horrendous, betway seem to be the worst.
They just cancel your account at will if you win a decent amount.

Try cancelling an account. Almost impossible. Most need a third party online organisation to set them restrictions of 1,2 or 5yr from being able to access online gambling platforms.

The whole industry is a scam. I worked for William Hill in their call centre when I was a student and in training they pretty much tell you this without saying it directly.

Another ridiculous example. A few of us use Pokerstars private tables during lockdown for a zoom game of poker and cans. £10 buy in, £10 rebuy, £10 add on. Pokerstars take a quid at buy in off everyone playing. So it's free money for them. I won the other week and came away with £130 after we'd split the prize between top 3. They told me I wasn't allowed to withdraw the money as it needed to be staked on their games first

I told them to fuck off and got my money.

Good post, I’ve stopped putting my bets on match threads, Ive over did a bit, I wouldn’t want anyone following my shite tips 😂

I don’t ever recall an online bookie or casino getting in touch with me saying oh btw the games you’ve been playing were glitching, here have your stakes back.

They were happy to take his money. It stinks that theyve taken so long to pay out.
I had sky slots pay £10 into my old online account as an adjustment - I'm thinking the slot I was playing glitched (they are the only ones ever). One other thing that used to piss me off is that as a low roller 10-25p a spin I was never going to get a sniff of a jackpot payout - I think they should warn you that the jackpot will only ever drop if you're wagering like £5 a spin or some shit.

The rules on here are that all betting threads and posts be moved to the Betting Forum, which like Parsnip is members only. The posts in this thread are clearly a cautionary tale overall (despite the eventual big payout for the subject of the thread). If we avoid anything specific on winnings, strategy etc then it can stay here, which would be good.

I’ll still be throwing a few quid on the National this coming weekend. Only time anybody in my family places a bet these days, as it’s part of a gathering and event, just for fun. Only a couple of quid each etc.

I hope I haven’t come over as judgemental on this subject, that wasn’t my intent. Having worked in the industry many, many moons ago I have seen the devastation gambling addiction can cause.

To be honest I found it easy, took me about 15mins to ban myself from every bookies online for 5 year, I didn’t bet great sums of money but I found myself spending so much time on the sites that I just got fed up with myself

Maybe things have changed in last 10yrs. Last thing I knew was that it was difficult to cancel one online account, let alone ban yourself from all online bookies. That’s good to hear tbh.
The online ones end up banning the accounts of anyone who consistently makes a profit from gambling. It is ridiculous that they can get away with it.
That bbc doc with Lloyd Griffith and the tennis court siding was a great eye opener to that. Somebody winning too much

I cannot remember the site I used but it was a simple registration, enter your phone number/numbers and same with email address, I suppose there is still ways around it for people but as I only have 1 phone and 1 email addy that’s me barred myself as I’m not wasting my time setting up other emails etc
