Obesity and is this normal?

It's really not a different argument. You questioned whether our national obesity rate contributed to the high mortality rate. Other countries have just as high, and if not higher rates of obesity - yet they don't seem to have hit our mortality rates. Which leaves the question why?

At 28% we are the highest in Europe, and because we have a National Health Service, we keep more elderly people alive than any other country.

These are fact, and also factors that should give you an idea of why our deaths are so high.

The obese deaths in every European country are proportionate to overall cases and population.

That's a very good argument. Coupled with the fiasco of discharging patients directly to care homes early in the pandemic might go a long way to understanding out awful death figures.

That and the fact we didn't lockdown anywhere near enough, then we opened up too soon. It's basically been a catalogue of spectacular fails - while at the same time, lining the pockets of Tory mates

So equipped with the same knowledge as the Government, which was zilch, how would you have handled it. Covid was always going to be a "Suck it and see" experiment. Just to add that this and previous Governments have funded a National Health Service that has kept more elderly alive than any other country in the world, but when that comes to light through a high death toll it becomes a bad thing and totally down to the Government. The 40,000 plus obesity deaths are also not the direct fault of this present Government as the rise in obesity has been pretty steady since the early nineties. When we deal in emotion only, we get nowhere.

If we had enquieries about every mistake made in the two world wars, they'ed still be going today. Finally, no Government manifesto will ever contain a guarantee of low deaths in the event of a Pandemic.

There's a difference between suck it and see and letting the Cheltenham Festival go ahead, or piss billions of public money on companies who magically sprang up who didn't produce any PPE.
Those are facts. No emotion in there.
The government could be blamed for 40,000 obesity deaths when you take austerity measures and the cost of living far outstripping the national living wage.
People will go for the cheaper and probably nutritionally crapper option because it's there and they can afford it.

The Mogg Woman tried to make a point and say a bag of potatoes cost less than a bag of chips. I'm sure they do, but they also have to be prepared, and doled out whereas if you're a single parent on low income and you need something quick to feed you and potentiall your kids, you take the easy option. Why? You'd have to ask them. Probably because life can be hard and they need easier options.

We're sat here in our collective ivory towers on our PCs while there are foodbanks throughout the country. Rather than pointing the finger or wringing hands about it, maybe we should put our brains to better use and come up with some ideas to tackle food poverty and poor nutrition

Austerity causes obesity? On that alone I won't bother to continue, just to say that I must be a miracle worker to have been a single parent to two children and fed them properly for 7 years. Even more strange is that every other single parent I knew also had normal weight kids. As a kid, myself and my peers lived through 7 years of rationing but none of us were fat or unfit....please explain this extrordinary phenomenon if you can.

I didn't say it was the only cause.
Maybe you should count yourself fortunate that you've got yourself together to be able to properly provide for your kids and get them to eat decent things.
Maybe you just lived in an area where it was more prevalent.

Aaah. Rationing. So you're a Boomer.
And there we end the conversation.

Hmm, you'll have to explain why being a Boomer makes me not worth debating with, but I'd still like to know how less food makes you obese, because every expert on the planet says it doesn't. Tell you what, I'll put less fuel in my car and see if it goes further.

Getting your kids to eat decent things = cooking!

Pizza boxes full of shite are sold at loads of takeaways now including Chinese and Indian food. I've never seen this particular offering on a menu like. I don't think I've ever managed to eat a full kebab. Even in a normal carton there is too much 'meat' for one person.
I keep well away from hybrid takeaways
Chippy selling pizza
Chinese selling fish and chips
Kebab shops selling.....

Just read on a "Child Obesity" website that austerity makes it impossible for poor families to access decent food for their children. The same website also says the majority of these children are going to school without breakfasts, and many also come home to no supper. So starving makes you fat also.

Taken from Aldi's online today. Meal for two adults and two children.

3 lb chicken 3.25
Peas 0.66
Potatoes 0.75
Carrots 0.44
Sprouts 0.79

Total 5.98

That works out at £1.50 each.

You're assuming they have the ability to cook them. i.e. power gas/electricity.

Should be part of the curriculum in my opinion. I'm not saying everyone has to do GCSE Home Economics or whatever they would call it these days, but it's basic life skills.
Budgeting too.

I was a Cub and a Scout etc when I was little. I was doing stuff for my Cookery badge or whatever when I was still in primary school.

I agree the Government made loads of mistakes during the pandemic but please stop coming out with the rubbish that people cannot afford nutritional food. If it was purely financial decision all the takeaway places in poor areas would close.

The reasons are many and complex but lack of money does not mean you buy kebab meat and chips to feed your kids.

I'd like to see the figures on families that are permently living without electricity and gas, your confidence suggests you have them to hand.

If what you say is true and proven, then you will also find that their children have been taken into care so they dont starve or freeze to death.

It needs to be back in the fabric of society. There needs to be Government led initiatives and some decent money spent but in the final analysis people need to take personal responsibility. Society needs to expect people to take personal responsibility.

I wondered that but apparently quite a few with prepayment meters. But I assume if you are going to get some stuff from kebab shop you could stick a fiver on the meter and get some fruit n veg from Aldi.

The term "personal responsibility" can get you a lot of grief on social media. Yes, it's now more cool to be irresponsible.

There are families living without heating because they cannot afford it. This is not a new thing sadly.
Those are just 2 examples from a quick google.

No arguments with this

I think social shaming is underrated. We should decide there are some core values and ways of behaving and then happily shame people who don't live up to them. Plenty of people get away with murder because society allows it and gives them excuses.

I do realise many people have pretty awful upbringings but resources need to be put in to break the cycle. I'm sure most people who lead chaotic disfunctional lives would prefer an easier time.

This needs to be backed up with resources from the Government but help assistance and guidance to come with conditions.

I worked in child care for many years...if kids are living without light and heat the authorities know very quickly, and action is taken immediately. If the cause of obesity is a lack of electricity, that's 18 million people sitting in the dark.

Thats not 18 million obese people...try again.
