Sash window restoration?

OOOSH YEAH

Striker
Apologies for the boring thread. Have 3 large Victorian, Panelled sash windows that I need to be restored. I’ve no idea what I’m talking about here so excuse the mistakes. The building is listed so they need to remain exactly the same. The cords to open them are fucked. The wood has been painted millions of times so ideally I’d like them stripping down to the wood, made smooth, painted, sealed and made to be fully functional. Anyone know of anyone that can do this type of work? Had a chat online with a bloke but I didn’t get filled with confidence by what he was saying.

Marley's at the Wheatsheaf build wooden sash windows from scratch. Not sure if they can restore. May be worth a try.

They did some joinery work for me, recommended.

Aye? Spoke to a few of the chippies at work and they had no idea. Seems like it’s a dying breed. Really struggling. Put the work online and had no takers. Would be a good earner so was surprised at no takers

Bloke there told me if it can be built from wood they can do it. May have to wait and will probably be expensive but it is a dying art.

Sounds like you need to find a heritage builder or sash windows specialist. There’s a couple up here who specialise in those but that’s no use to you.

Edit: these seem to do what you want.

Mate of mine in a conservation area wanted his refurbished- turned out they were beyond repair so had to have new - it’s cost him an absolute fortune as they new they had to be authentic sash due to conservation rules.

You need a carpenter or a joiner for starters and it will need to be a someone who specialises in this work. It’s a very specialist piece of work restoring listed windows. My father in law has made millions doing this in London. It’s quite a rare thing and he is London based where the vast majority of the work is, so up here people who are qualified to do it will be as rare as hens teeth. Might be cheaper to get them replaced rather than repaired mate.

If you can't find anyone to repair and you need to replace give me a shout
There are a number of very good Sash and Case manufacturers in Edinburgh and Glasgow who can replace them - I can point you in the right direction of the best ones

@OOOSH YEAH I meant to say not a joiner. It’s a real specialists job

Used to have a fitter working for me that used to do this on a weekend. £600 day rate he charged. Based in the south mind. Might be cheaper getting new ones replaced with timbalite thin double glazed units. We just replaced a load in a building in sheels. Charged about £1300 + vat per box window.
