I will be really surprised if he is mind
I dunno. He's a "good lad", can hold a bat and decent in the field, that's all Smith cares about - doesn't matter how good (or poor) you are at your main discipline

thats harsh I think, he is trying to invest in young players

argh inside edge, always harder to start the next morning.

Good bowler this lad

Need a big innings from Lawrence here or this is slipping away.

Jaffa to lawrence straight up
What we saying tonight then lads?
Need to be batting 1st innings by close somehow to have a good enough chance
Root looks fidgety....compared to his god mode yesterday anyway
Lawrence 2nd test in a row should have been stumped

Bairstow was walking. He'd have been run out otherwise. 116/3.

Thats twice he has look set, then not got going when restarting the next morning, something to work on

One of the challenges of these pitches

Lawrence all over the place here, missed chance.

Out by a mile, need to gather them
Looking forward to Stokes being back like, no offence to Lawrence, but him n Root at the crease now be ideal.
I agree with Bumble there btw on Bairstow, almost like he is bit in his shell early in morning, better to have that attacking mindset, he could have swept that ball. Thats when he plays best.

You'd have to be concerned going to India with Sibley, Crawley and Lawrence in your top 5, so young

Pope coming back from injury too

They'll learn from it, but could be very tough.
Joe Root has more than 2/3rds of our runs. 89 to him and the rest have 43 (at exactly a run an over). He's on a different planet now he's back in form. Just 11 to go for another ton.

Just playing stunningly well. Slowed down a bit due to wickets.

Legend, just happy to see him bat like this regardless of the result.

He is captain, but most important is his batting.

Bit sick of this joker on the fort like.
Top sledging by Dickwella today like, along the lines of happy to take your money in IPL but not go to India for tests!

England worked it out last time they were here, that sweeping is the way to go, almost just sweep and reverse sweep for 1s and 2s, keeps the scoreboard moving, if you can play it well, its safer than most shots

Root and Buttler did it 3 years ago, as did Jennings.

Its interesting listening to the commentators there on about englands best players of spin, they always go through the hold back in my day names like keith fletcher. I bet they'd never dare say Jennings, when in reality he probably is considering his record.

Should be the spare batsman in the squad to be fair.

He gets mentioned often enough when talking about the current squad but he just hasn't got the longevity to be discussed in overall terms.

Really do not get the obsession with Jennings on here. Is it cos he’s ex-Durham?
May as well say Foakes should be in as a specialist batsman, given how well he played and good he looked last time we were here.
