I find these kind of tools are good for comprehension, but unless you’re going to be talking with natives, regularly, then can’t imagine it’ll be much use in a conversational context.

I've found it great for reading. I can navigate my way around a lot of written German with a degree of educated guessing.

Speaking and listening, you need to be talking with Germans and learning from them to improve massively. Duolingo is very weak in that regard

But it will teach you enough to manage basic interactions in shops or bars.


Once you've mastered "The Lion likes my couch" and "the horse wants my cookie" you'll be flying

I've got a 429 day streak going for learning Bahasa Indonesian. If anybody here uses Duolingo there's an easy to setup fiddle that allows you to get unlimited hearts. So no more making 5 mistakes and you're forced into practice or to pay their fees.
 
510 day streak in Spanish. Helps loads with reading and bits of grammar and vocabulary, also keeps it fresh in your mind as I do 5 minutes twice per day. However you'd struggle to get to conversational level

I've been doing night classes at Durham uni for 18 months and that's been the way forward

But mostly, going to Spain and going to places where they don't speak English and just getting mucked in the most effective way

It's not even something that's a bit dodgy. You just change your account to you're a teacher and you get unlimited hearts. Here's a video on how to do it. Or just Google unlimited hearts on duolingo, there's plenty of info out there.
I did my account, opened the app and I'm a teacher with unlimited hearts. That was 8 months ago and no problems since.
