Wouldn’t shock me if something came out about that deal in time. Seems very fishy.

We have obviously made some bad buys over the years but the signing of Joelinton for £40m must rank as one the worst value for money signings ever. I’m really upset about that!!
Pound for pound unbelievably he is a worse signing than our very own Jack Rodwell
Jacks goals per game record looks twice as good
Considering Joel ‘couldn’t hit a barn door’ Linten he cost 4 x as much and no doubt on double the wages but he still be a legend in the black n whites eyes 😂

They're going to lose a lot of money on him, either when someone takes a punt on him for pennies, or he sits out his contract taking a wage, unable to get a game. Not one that will help the "NET SPEND" argument at all.

Almiron as well.

Sometimes players move for big money and for whatever reason it just doesnt work out. Despite that you can generally see glimpses in there play that sort of makes you see why they were signed but with joelinton i cannot see anything in him that would justify £5m never mind £40m, absolutely nothing. Strange signing.
I actually agree, he is a strange signing.

I'd never heard of him prior to him joining us and I was of the mindset that we'd sneaked under the radar in terms of getting in a Cabaye type or a Robert type.
If we'd signed him for 5 million I'd still say he's not really worth it.....but 40 million?

I think these's some serious underhand stuff going on with these type of players...and I don't just mean with us.

Something definitely weird going on with that price tag.

Bruce makes 4 type of signings. 1) Bargain basement ones from relegated clubs who start well but ultimately go on to prove why they were playing for relegated clubs. 2) Decent ones that he pays exactly the market rate for, who turn out to be good value for money, and develop well. 3) Players who you are surprised by how much he paid, who rarely come good - most that he overpays for turnout horrific. 4) Players who are very, very average at best, but who can point a lot and are happy to regularly dust themselves down. His signings fall about 25% into each bucket.

I’ve posted this before.

I heard on the grapevine that Joelinton was a moment of Mike Ashley coming completely out of character. A willy-waving contest. He and Rafa had never seen eye-to-eye. Rafa wouldn’t sign a new contract. He was having digs at fatty every other day in the press.

Ashley’s recruitment team earmarked JL as a top player. Hoffenheim wanted £30m. Rafa said he’s not even worth £20m. It had become personal between the two of them. In an act of spite he told Rafa that he was signing him anyway, not for 20m but 40m and he’d still make a profit. Just because he could. It’s the only occasion at NUFC where he let his heart overrule his business head.

Signing him was one of the reasons Benitez left, he didn’t want him as he knew he wasn’t good enough , Bruce welcomed him with open arms, sums up the difference between the two.

I'm going to play devil's advocate with Joelinton.

It seems Joe Nickson scouted him 24 times and came back with a glowing report on him being, outstanding. (Apparently).

I used to argue that he's played out of position (which he was) and his real game was part of an attacking mindset, which, in reality, since coming to Newcastle, he's almost been abused by being thrown right into the deep end as a CF which is absolutely not his game and even worse, an isolated CF much of the time.

Maybe I'm a bit too harsh on him due to the football we play as a unit, which is soul destroying for most past...and he seems to be taking the brunt of the hammering for that.

I'd like to see Joelinton play in a primarily attack minded team based on his real game. It's possible we may see his value if that happened, because he's definitely got something to offer, as mad as that sounds to those who already had him dead and buried.

I've lost patience with the set up, not just Joelinton.
I think he's a bit of a scapegoat for fans and I'm being drawn in.

He may never see out his potential with us. It may take the right move for us to see it.
I reckon, with the right manager who can balance the team and use Joelinton n the right way, we could see the worth of the lad. It's a long shot at our club with the stay in the league at all costs, mindset...it seems, by Mike Ashley......but....hmmmm.

Joelinton's proved he's capable of being decent. The West Ham game and the Man Utd game...etc, has proved that, with the right set up, he becomes an integral part.

Many may not agree with this (likely an understatement) but I do genuinely see something in him as a player, I just don't get how he could be scouted and then have a 40 million price tag at the stage he was at.
Something is not right with that...but; like I said earlier.

Absolutely cringeworthy. It suited Benitez to join Newcastle at the time as his daughters were still at school. He would have joined any prem team less than three hours from West Kirby - he was desperate for the Everton job. They love the fact of the reflective glory of a Champions league winner.

But he got us to tenth. The third best finish in my living memory. I genuinely felt sorry for him in the BBC interview.
He is the classic "taken them as far as he can" manager.

Values aside but could Joelinton replace Wyke and score as many goals for us in this division while Wyke can better Joelintons total in the premiership?
