I gave up like - music of the Ainur and all that. It probably gets interesting later on but the start was just too heavy going.

I'm up to me favourite chapter in LOTR at the moment - Flotsam and Jetsam (the few pages preceding might actually be me favourite bit - where they find Merry and Pippin enjoying the spoils of Isengard).

I got nice editions of Unfinished Tales and The Fall of Gondolin for me birthday and Christmas. Looking forward to reading them.

Aye - same here. Headache material.

I think I skipped over the songs on my second read.
I would skip them but it’s my boys first read. It’s weird because I’d forgotten how many there were, maybe I skipped them then!

I really dislike the Disney singalong in the The Hobbit where the Goblin King's doing his song, but to be fair it is lifted straight from the book.

It's just brought it back to me there, and this is something I've never thought about in donkey's years, but I actually had an old notepad when I was about 17/18 where I'd tried putting some of the little songs to guitar chords with a folky arrangement. I was probably thinking I'll put these on the difficult 3rd album or summit.

The Silmarillion is by far my favourite tolkien book now but as most have said a lot of people are put off by all the creation myth stuff in the first chapters. My advice is give it another go and miss all that out.

Miles better in the book - glossed over in the films.

In fact, all of Sam and Frodo's part is better in the books. Faramir, Gollum, Shelob, the Plains of Gorogoroth etc..

I enjoy the films, love the first two, but they're nee patch on the books like. And I still hate what they did with the ghosts in Return of the King - completely ruins the Battle of the Pelennor Fields.

Yeah its been 25 years since I read the books so I forget how different they are from the films.

Agree about the ghosts. Why make them green?😬

Add me to the sizable gang that rattled through The Hobbit and LoTR, loved them, and then totally crashed and burned on Silmarillion shortly after. Mind that was school, so we're talking 35+ years ago

I’d love to watch the two towers in the cinema again, when the battle of helms deep was on it was f***ing brilliant

When we went it was too full so sat right at the front looking up. Helms Deep was mental close up😂

Maybe theyll put them in the cinema for the 25th Anniversary.

I always remember in the commentaries, PJ said he'll maybe add extra footage and correct the weird Gollum from FOtR for the 25th. Cant see it happening mind now the 4Ks are out. Maybe a directors cut or something.

The appearance didn't bother me - I can't remember how or if they're even described in the book. It was the sackless spectral whirlwind that decimated the Hosts of Mordor and the Haradrim that pissed me off. No Grey Company or southern reinforcements from the hijacked Umbar ships. No counterattack from Minas Tirith's forces. All the nuances of the tactical assault, together with the clouds breaking all lost for the sake of an effects laden deus ex machina.
Arnie still wants to do The Legend of Conan where they tell the story of him when he's older and become a king, like the final shot of Barbarian.

I'd be willing to give anyone who takes it on apart from that the benefit of the doubt, at least see how they do
Got cancelled I think.

Someone bought part 1 of LOTR for our 8 year old as a Christmas pressie, he read the first 2 pages and now I’m re-reading it.

I first read all 3 parts about 25 years ago and I found it hard going, but I’m taking my time now and my plan is to take a few notes of the characters’ journeys e.g. when the fellowship is separated, and to refer to the map/wiki etc.

I’ve even read the prologue and the notes on the text this time. It’s amazing how Tolkien created such an in-depth quantity of material.

As for the films. Visually stunning but difficult to watch again as it’s a bit too ‘Hollywood’ for me. I liked the animated film (1980s?) but only part 1 was made.

Try looking out for The Atlas of Middle Earth by Karen Fonstad, excellent maps of middle earth, climate, elevations etc and also plots the journey of the fellowship on the maps. It gives you an excellent understanding of Tolkien’s works.

Thank you, I have a Tolkien Bestiary book somewhere or other.

100% agree. Worst part of any of the films.
