Best meal you’ve had

REDM1ST

Midfield
Think mine was up in Edinburgh in a nice restaurant. It was ox cheek served on a bed of mash with greens and a red wine sauce. Beautiful soft meat that just fell apart. I did have a few Malbec’s before hand which may have swayed my judgement 🍷

In terms of pure satisfaction from eating it, it's me old man's Sunday roast. Been ~5 years since I last had one but think about it every Sunday.

Sprawled out on the sofa drinking coffee and watching the footie all day; family all gathered round the table having a bit crack on; helping the old man doing the washing up and having a few beers.

Best kind of Sunday that

My bairns grandads Christmas dinners, he pulls out all the stops and everything is deliciously flavoursome (hope I get one this Christmas, last one I had was Christmas 2019).

Back in 1981..a warm September night in the restaurant atop the Peak in Hong Kong. Before it got all fancied up and touristy.

Lovely Chinese meal and some Tiger beer, watching all the lights, the planes come in and go from what was then Kowloon airport and the Star ferry sailing back and forth from the island. Lovely lass by my side and a planned trip into China the next day.

That's probably the same meal I had at six in the Baltic
The ox cheek was incredible
Other than that oyster with chorizo shallots and red wine vinegar followed by rump steak and chips in 21 queen street or halibut when marsden grotto was a fish restaurant

Best for consistency
Magpie in Whitby

I can pin point exactly the best one I’ve ever had. On Xmas Eve 2003 I was walking home from the pub when I was randomly attacked, had my jaw broken in 5 places, still have 6 plates in it, and it was wired shut for 4 months. I lived on cold soup and frijj milkshakes, as luck would have it he also knocked out a tooth which fitted a straw in perfectly.
Anyway after having the wires taken out and told I could resume eating but very very slowly and soft things first, that night my mam made me creamy mashed potato with thick gravy mixed in and to this day that is the best meal I’ve ever had by far.

Best for me for value for money along with the quality of the food had to be at Etto in Dublin, not over priced, not overly pretentious but really good quality food in a cosy but comfortable environment.

Got to the point where I didn’t need to book as I was always dining alone when staying over there, had a special little counter seat that they would setup for me.

Ate there a lot and tried many different dishes and don’t remember having anything to complain about for any of them.

WATTBA!!!!
An authentic paella cooked over burning pine wood/pinecones in Ibiza in a three foot wide paellera in 1974. Never tasted the like again.
Honestly my best meal ever was in the Kuwait/Iraq desert I don’t even know where I was at the time, had been out setting up some stuff and the 6 of us had not seen anyone for a few days, living in rashions, then we got word everyone else was moving up to join us, needless to say the chefs were the ones we were looking forward to seeing, the food was simple mince and veg in gravy, the lads and me got sent straight to the front of the line, and I’ve never enjoyed a meal as much as I did that day/night

Home made chicken and veg pie with creamed mashed potatoes and steepy mushy peas, with gravy, followed by home made chocolate sponge cake and custard.
There's been many others but one's like this make me beg for it to never end.

First time I went to the Rib Room at the Ramside the food was fantastic.
Perfect medium steak with a king prawn starter and a soufflé sweet all washed down by a nice red, simply fantastic.
Each time I've returned since it hasn't lived up to the first experience, I went to the other Rib Room at Hardwick all and it failed to deliver as well.
Still decent food, but the steak was simply divine the first time, soft, tender and cooked to perfection.

Most memorable was the first time I went to Cuba and we ate on the beach, feet in the sand, eating lobster and champagne watching the sun go down, awesome.

The problem is Cuba is that the food is tasteless most of the time, you watch Canadian TV in your room and seeing adverts for KFC jalapeno tower stacks made my actually dribble. I think my body was so devoid of carbs and salt I started to dream of food by the end of the holiday...

I've never heard the expression "My bairn's grandad" before. Unless you have a very interesting family tree it is surely either your dad or your father-in-law?? Soz if I'm thick !
