Vegan Thread

We gave up meat about two years or so ago, but I still have eggs and occasionally shell fish.
Predominantly though we are veggies.
Health wise, from being crippled with arthritis, the other half now has hugely increased mobility. Whether that is co-incidental or not I don't know.
I rarely miss meat, veggie cuisine has moved on dramatically in the last 20 years and I'm really impressed with the quality of some of the substitutes avaible. And just like meat eaters any veggie dish can be enhanced with a decent sauce.
The one big thing I've noticed personally is how improved my digestion is. I'll leave that there as to expand on that point wii be to give too much info.

I've dabbled with vegetarianism for nearly 30 yor.

I'm finally considering the next step of at least partial veganism.

II'd like to ask:

What benefits have you noticed?

What downsides have you seen?

The single biggest challenge?

I have lost weight and don't get the feeling I want to cram food down my gob. I'm slimmer and fitter but that might be because I've ran a lot during lockdowns. I just feel better.

I haven't seen many downsides. It is more time consuming but not a lot. Going out for a meal is a pain at times because the food they serve in your average restaurant isn't great but I'm out for the company. Also, this year has been great because the chances to go out have been limited.

I haven't seen it as a challenge either. I wanted to cut out temptation to eat crap and the challenge was to avoid it. Going vegan has made me avoid it. Problem is that big business is starting to make loads of vegan junk food.
Do you check beers and that ?

I know which ones are but if I make a mistake I couldn't give a flying fuck. It isn't a religion.

I also have leather footwear.
I hope they’re shit
Vegan cheese and vegan bacon is the work of the devil. Vile stuff.

Fanx.

I've yet to find a substitute for milk in tea.

I drink Earl Grey and Green tea occasionally but love a good old one British style tea with milk.

Everything I've tried ruins the cuppa

Threads going as well as expected.

Got a chilli in the slow cooker that smells class ready for bait tonight. Will do for burritos tomorrow as well.

I don't drink tea or have milk in my coffee, but have you tried that Alpro - My Cuppa? Apparently it's been designed specifically for that purpose and doesn't split with the heat.

oat milk is the best. Alpro or Oatly but I use Alpro (there are always deals on)

I cannot remember what tea tastes like with milk.

My cuppa is supposed to be excellent. Never had it.

I have tried it.

It's not bad in Coffee (latte but I drink mainly black coffee anyhoo)

It's not great in tea

I tried having veggie days but I just enjoy eating meat and fish - especially good old british fish we have taken back from the French and Spanish.

I’ve finally managed to make a vegan chilli which makes me not miss the meat version, only gets better with age too
Be good to hear recipes like if anyone's got some tried and tested favourites?

I like this Meera Sodha one Meera Sodha’s vegan recipe for leeks, saffron and haricot beans

No intention of going vegan / veggie as a full-on label, but naturally only eat meat 2-3 times a week anyway, so do like a good spread of options.

She has some great recipes. The sprout nasi goreng is tremendous, would recommend that.

I do prefer a veg chilli to a meat one these days like. Always whack a dollop of creme fraiche / sour cream and/or some grated cheese on top still mind ya.

I only eat meat or fish about twice a week on average but think I'd struggle big time being vegan, probably more so by having no cheese/milk or eggs than the meat part. Any of the substitutes I've had have tended to be rubbish.

My partner is also a coeliac so there's already enough dietary restrictions to have to fanny on with in my gaff, fair play to anyone who can do it.

The Bosh lads do a very good chilli. In general all their stuff is great but quite time consuming. Couple of annoying fuckers like.

They should not be allowed any meat flavour replacement food or any vegan sausages and burgers etc...they made their bed.
