Living in Germany and wanting to give a diverse view of UK. Got talking to my year 10 class (15/16 year olds) about Northern Ireland/Republic of Ireland. They wanted to know if there is a good series/documentary they could watch to have a better understanding of the history there. Any ideas, anyone? Cheers in advance.

I watched the documentary series 'Spotlight on the Troubles: A Secret History' recently on BBC iplayer. Seven episodes 60 to 90 minutes in length. I found it to be detailed, unbiased and I learned a fair bit more about the conflict than I knew.

'The Wind that Shakes the Barley' by Ken Loach in a very good film on the Irish War for Independence, though obviously less recent.

Presently reading A Secret History on the Troubles by Ed Moloney. Seems to be very comprehensive and well researched thus far.

This was very good!

What a show that is. Still waiting on Series 3 but I'm not sure it'll happen at this rate. Despite C4's promises!
2022, covid has pushed back the filming. You’re right though, might be too old to play schoolgirls.
Edit. They are already 27, 28 and 33

Wasn't Alexander The Great , Irish? Well the movie had ALEXANDER played by Colin Farrell was pure Irish accent with other Irish actors in his army . Cringeworthy !

Back next year. Delayed by the writer being pregnant and the COVID. It’s happening.

That’s was fantastic and well worth a watch.
Probably needs Ken Burns to give it his usual 70 hour treatment

That would be incredible. Not sure the soundtrack would be as good as the Vietnam one....

the guard it's an action comedy it's over the top but if you ever been in an irish pub showing it on a movie night with everyone roaring with laughter it captures the conflict between modernity (drug use the celtic tiger etc) and the recent rural past (farms the aftermath of the troubles) The Guard (2011) - IMDb
