Smart meters, any good?

I'm just about to renew my electric/gas contract, and usually just go with the best deal available on a comparison site.

Some of the better deals are only if you take a smart meter too. Apart from the slightly lower cost, what other advantages do they offer? I don't really see the point in them

end of estimated bills and the ability to see what uses the most electricity and to what cost.

also be aware that some companies have meters which will only work whilst you are with them as your supplier. they are going to roll out meters which will be compatible for all companies but with covid that maybe delayed.

one way of knocking 10% of your annual bill is to turn down your thermostat 2 degrees

That was the reason why I had smart meters installed. Anyone who doesn't know which appliances use most gas/electric must be rather thick.

My last contract was with scottish power. I didn't realise at the time but i was supposed to have a meter installed on that tariff, but whenever they phoned to arrange an appointment, they could only offer mon-fri 9-5pm. But i'd say that was not convenient as we're out at work, do you not do evenings or weekends. They'd say not at the moment, we'll phone again in a few weeks time. This went on for 12 months and we never actually got the meter installed

Had one then switched suppliers, rendering it redundant.

Like most things in this stupid country, it isn't standardised so everyone uses the same.

Shite.
As I said above. Until the second generation are rolled out, which is coming, getting one now will tie you to one supplier

It won’t tie you to a supplier. That would be illegal.

I assume that SMETS2 is the new standard.
If you have a smart meter, you can shop around and switch supplier as you can with a traditional meter.

If you get a smart meter do they disconnect the old one and take it away ? i would like that as i want to make the cupboard under the stairs open plan.

It does in the sense of the meter working only for a particular supplier. You are free to transfer anytime you want, but you’ll have to get the smart meter removed and replaced by your new supplier.

that’s the problem and I’ve inside info on this, is all I will say. Until the second generation is rolled out so all smart meters are compatible no matter what supplier you choose, then you have to go through what I said above

I had a smart meter and then changed to another company - the smart meter no longer works and the new company have put me on a waiting list to get a new one. Now, I have to do manual readings each month.
