eBay help... buyer claiming item is faulty

On a different note, but whilst whinging about Ebay, some of you might have notice that the eBay forum on here which listed Sunderland related stuff for sale on eBay has disappeared.

It was used to generate a small amount of commission (about £30/year) towards running this site - and of course they only paid this out when you crossed the payment threshold - so every 2 or 3 years!

A couple of months ago I got an email from eBay:

They claimed I hadn't responded to earlier emails from them (which I haven't seen) - and my response to this email was just ignored by them and our account had already been disabled so I couldn't see how much commission they had "reversed".

It won't be a huge amount of money, but it annoys me the way they just unilaterally closed the account and kept all of it!

The scoundrels!

I'm off to paint boycoutt ebay on my bedsheet.

I don't have any other option but to boycott them seeing they won't let me rejoin their network!

We weren't the only forum site this happened to, and I fail to see what this will achieve for them in the longer term as we won't be sending the buyers to them any longer.
In the short term of course they robbed the commission!

Sounds like you have been unlucky mate. Shes probably dropped it or something and its stopped working. Phones and electricals are always a risky thing to sell on ebay as some people think they are getting a warranty. In a way they are, as ebay will always side with the buyer.

Lesson learned unfortunately. Take the hit and move on.
Yeah I think I’ll just have to put it down to experience. Thing is I stopped using eBay for a while as I got sick of them taking 10% of everything but got lured back in by the £1 selling fees. Now I think about it it makes sense for them to do these promos if they always side with the buyer. From their point or view a pound is better than nowt especially when there will be thousands extra who list items when these offers are on.

In the short term of course they robbed the commission!
Feel free to join me in shitting in eBay’s cyber knicker drawer!!

Hate eBay, like. Last few items I've got from them have been counterfeit - it's like an online black market.

However, if you get a brand new iPhone X off your insurance I might consider buying it from you. 😉

I sold some Gymshark tonal shorts that had the word Gymshark embossed in a two tone navy down one leg. I had worn them once, they didn’t fit me so I washed them and put them on eBay rather than send them back as I thought with them being sold out I’d get my money back and some.

the lad who bought them was a complete bell end. Complained that he received them 48 hours later instead of 24 as the ad said (it actually said will post within 24 hours of payment), then he said they must have been washed hundreds of times as he couldn’t see the word Gymshark on the leg. After sending him more pictures (I take loads before I sell anything just in case this happens), got pictures of them on the website, and even messaged Gymshark’s customer service team who confirmed that the pictures I had put on showed very little sign of wear, he still wouldn’t accept it, called me a fraudster and left me negative feedback.

When selling things, always state “sold as seen” and a disclaimer that says something like “UK bidders only. Payment must be received within 24 hours of auction end and will post within 24 hours of cleared payment”

I bought a high-end centre speaker off ebay and it just didn't work, so sent it back. The seller accused me of swapping it and I had to get on to ebay, they came down in my favour but it was a right chew on.

Loads of comments saying sellers have no rights anymore and not to use eBay for high value etc.

So what are people using instead?
Facebook marketplace .Easy .Instant .free .
Few timewasters of course.
Anything high value .Other Facebook pages .( guitars ,motorbikes etc )
Ebay is very quickly regressing to the standards often found on Facebook marketplace, particularly noticable when selling. I sell old football shirts quite regularly, and often make a few quid here and there. It's at the point now where after an auction has ended, and someone's bidded on and won the item, it's pretty much 50/50 whether I'll actually get paid or not. The amount of bullshit excuses I get is embarrassing, and even then its after I've had to chase people for days for payment. Don't bid if you don't want it, end of.

Had one bloke claim not to have received a shirt a month after I'd posted it. A quick online check using the tracking number proved it had been delivered the day after I posted it. Looked at his feedback, and he obviously had a record of this little scam. Reported to ebay, nowt back. They don't give a shit as long as they get their "cut".

I wouldn't dare sell anything electrical/valuable on there these days. Too many lying, unreliable twats out there unfortunately. Take it to CEX when you get it back.
EBay has been like this for years though
They aren't interest in auction and small sellers any more
It's what made them but now they want to be Amazon.

Don't want to sound argumentative but the last sentence is kind of pointless, UK bidders only, just restrict it to UK shipping only (people can use forward shipping companies but you cant stop that), payment within 24 hours is pointless as eBay have rules you agree to when you open the account which gives the buyers 7 days then you can open a case, sold as seen, as its online they cant truly see so if they get them and believe they do not match they will always win a return, you will be charged too. The will post within 24 hours, that's set by you again on your dispatch time, if you are a private seller always set it as 3 working days, that way even if something pops up you have those extra few days to cover yourself.

eBay isnt for private sellers now, its businesses using buy it now, eBay will make 99% of their money from businesses so the small seller is just not cared about, that's the harsh reality of it.

Also just another punch in the gut for the op if they paid you into PayPal and you are forced to refund you dont get your PayPal fees back either, since eBay started Managed Payments (they pay me into my business account) PayPal went in a mood and refused to refund processing charges.

Selling cars and bikes on ebay is no bother. Different set up, unless you are a trader then different rules apply, warranty etc...

Nope sold them a few years ago, they bought a company called Adyen or have a partnership with them so now instead of me paying ebay fees and papypal fees I just have a standard 12.9% + 30p each transaction (plus 55p if international) instead of the 12% ebay fee plus 4% paypal fee, only downside is it takes 3 days to get my funds.

This is currently just for business sellers though, currently private sellers can still just use PayPal but thatll soon be phased out so ebay can make more money.

Ahh didnt know that. I did get an email off ebay last week for me to set up payments directly from ebay for items i sell rather than use PayPal. Thought it was a scam.😅

There will be hundreds of scam emails going around as everyone will need to agree to move and give ebay their bank details so better to be safe.

If a buyer wants a refund they are given one no questions asked, it's a buyers market.
This. eBay and PayPal always favour the buyer. Their ‘investigations’ usually just consist of looking at the message exchanges between the aggrieved parties then refunding the buyer regardless .
