Any one play chess

I downloaded a chess app on the back of watching the queen's gambit. I played a little bit as a kid (poorly but enthusiastically), got through the first handful of difficulties without really thinking about it but once it ramps up you can really feel it I reckon.

My problem is I just don't really have any kind of plan, after the first 4 or 5 moves it seems chaotic and it always feels like I'm reacting to what the computer is doing rather than trying to play my own game and trying to force anything, any wins I get just from opportunity. Guess its just experience that you need to get better but would be handy to have someone telling me when and where I go wrong!

I would be up for some games if someone fancied some easy wins too and they promise not to laugh!

See above on Chess.com (PC or app).

Nice one mate, downloading the app now.

Will have a few more games to familiarise myself and try to remember how to fecking play and will give you a shout, no laughing at my brainless moves mind you
I’m not good at all. Set the challenge at 14 days, means we can dip in and out rather than have to complete it in a oner.

Don't think you'll need 14 days mind but will do ;)

Just played my first game on there and first game against a real person since I was about 12, fell into every bastard trap he set! If it was recorded it could well be a YouTube tutorial "how not to play chess"

Anyone remember watching Nigel Short playing Gary Kasparov on channel 4 in the 90s?
Played Nigel Short once in a simultaneous a fair few years ago. I think he played 24 at the same time and your obliged to move when the player is facing you. Unfortunately as he polished off the weaker players he comes round quicker and systematically beats the stronger club players. The whole exercise takes about 2 hours and some gave him a game but most are cannon fodder but a worthwhile experience just to see an expert and grandmaster at work even with the inevitable defeat in my case.

It’s 14 days between moves. 😳

Don't ignore learning about castling, pawn promotion and the move called en passant. These are crucial to developing your game. If you are not confident about the moves then you won't learn.

Picture the chess board as a battlefield with both sides separated by a river. The central spaces are the bridge over that river and so are usually critical to control of the battle. learn to attack and control these squares.

A good game style for novice players, especially if you are playing computers, is the Ruy Lopez, which is all about this style of play. Most computer games I've come across tend to concentrate on this style of attack at the lower levels. This goes way back to the 1490's so you can see how. It centres around the control of the middle squares and will teach you how to support your pieces whilst also attacking the opponents.

Enjoy the game and don't worry about the defeats until you start to get the hang of using your pieces to do a couple of things at the same time.

If, during a game you suddenly get that 'oh shit' feeling then don't be afraid to go back a few moves and replay using fresh moves. At this stage it is all about learning so, although technically cheating, it is more important that you learn than stroking the computer's feelings! Seriously, learning is why they put that feature in the program. If you finally get beaten and don't know where you went wrong then you can look back through your game and try to see how you lost, but don't feel pressured into doing this all the time. You need to enjoy playing chess to want to keep on playing chess!
Nom.

You should watch Anna Rudolf's vids. Even if you have no interest in chess. I find her voice and the detailed explanations very relaxing.

I was superb player, local champion then progressed through to Northern champ before securing UK title in 2012.
I was then flown over to Russia to play Grand master Gary Kasparov, I’d have beaten him aswel but I couldn’t be bothered to play so just took the knight off.....

Reminds me of when I got the job at the factory making chess pieces and my first week I was on knight shift

Sounds like a missed opportunity.
