eBay help... buyer claiming item is faulty

I sold my 3 year old iPhone X on eBay last week. It was near mint condition other than a small chip which I showed on the listing. Sent it recorded 1st class. The lass who bought it had it 4 days and then started messaging saying the screen wasnt responding and she wants a refund. I struggle to believe it worked faultlessly for me then 4 days after selling it breaks so it seems something fishy is going on to me.

I’ve never had an issue like this. eBay say I have to accept the return and my PayPal is now showing -£350 as a balance.

The cynic in me thinks she’s either broke it or swapped the screen and is trying to scam me. It looks like she holds all the cards.

Anyone had a similar experience with any advice what to do next? Or am I basically stuck with a worthless knackered phone now?

I’m pretty sure that when you list a phone on eBay you type the IMEI number into the listing. Have a look and it should be on your previous listing so you can verify the return

Have you got the original box or anything with the IMEI number on ? It might be a completely different phone she returns
I sent the box with it, but have a record of the serial no. Its not printed on the phone so if the screen doesn’t work I’m not sure how il check it.

You will have to wait for phone to be returned and see if it has same chip on it?
if it hasn’t it must have been swapped,as said above I used to take photos of everything I could before sending.

Never sell stuff like that on eBay, hope that helps.

I used to do this but never had any bother so got a bit lazy.
Will be trying to swap it.
You can check in phone settings for serial and imei but good luck. eBay is the spawn for this crack
eBay have been no help I think it’ll be my finish using it.
If you have a laptop or Mac then plug it into there and you’ll be able to get the IMEI
I backed it up to my Mac before I sold it so hopefully that recognises if it’s still the same phone.
Doesn’t help now but no way I’d be eBaying a phone.
I’ve sold loads of high value stuff on there and never had a problem. Surprised me how little protection there is for sellers mind.

This.
I fell foul of a buyer the other month when I sold my Mrs old phone on eBay.
There was nothing wrong with it but they were a complete pain in the arse and demanded a refund.
To add insult to injury I was charged to print a f***ing returns label for the buyer.
As a result I’ve closed my eBay account and will never use them again.

Don't ever sell high value items on Ebay because the scammers hold all the cards (be careful if selling even on say Marketplace / Facebook as some arseholes will do a charge back after they've paid you citing that the goods didn't work or summat).

it’s visible in settings , before it is returned ask her to send you the details and tell her you have the serial number to check - if it’s different then say you’ll get police involved

Ive sold loads of stuff on EBay including phones and expensive handbags and never had an issue at all thankfully but a recent phone I sold I did take photos of the serial numbers etc

Settings ) General ) About will show the serial number

My last couple of phones I sold for cash through gumtree but I got lured in by the £1 selling fees thinking I’d get a better price. As it turned out I only got £30 more than one of the phone buying sites offered, wish I’d just took that now.

Thanks. I told her I had a record of the serial no and also that I think she’s up to something and she’s replied saying I’m the one who’s trying to scam her. Really frustrating but I think I’ll just have to wait and see what she sends back. She has over 400 feedback score so I didn’t think there’d be any issues. It might just be coincidental but I’m just struggling to believe it would randomly break a couple of days after she received it.

Sellers are goosed now on there
Stopped bothering years ago
Not much use to you
Loads of clever skip rat buyers know all the tricks

Similar happened with me, though it wasn't a phone I was selling, just an old coat.

The twat buying it hadn't read the listing right, it was Lacoste so the size was 58 (I'd even used an image of their own size guide in my listing, 58 = XL) yet they just said "not as described" (expecting it to.be a 58 inch chest, obviously a fat bastard).

They just sided with the buyer and didn't read anything I put to them.

So basically as a seller you have no rights.

I refused the return, sent the postie packing with it. I unlinked all cards and bank accounts in PayPal. I ended up with a negative PayPal balance and a negative eBay balance for the returns label.

PayPal even tried debt collection on me.

But I said if you want the money, take me to court and I will show the judge my listing and photos, we'll see if he agrees it's not as described

It all went quiet eventually, the PayPal account was closed down by them.

Will I fuck ever use eBay or sell on it again.

Loads of comments saying sellers have no rights anymore and not to use eBay for high value etc.

So what are people using instead?
