The Crown

Surprised no-one has mentioned that a royal visit to SUNDERLAND was referenced in episode 10 (visit by Prince Charles)

PS I read Diana visited St Benedict's Hospice in 1993 (never knew that - my Mam RIP died there in 2007)\

Just finished 9 and it’s all superb. I think my favourite episode has been ep7 about the cousins and Margaret. Never knew that at all and found the situation mind blogging.

I’ve all the sympathy in the world for Charles. He hugely resented Di for simply not being Camilla. His whole life he’d been told by his close family he can’t do the things he wanted to do. The mental issues that would bring and inner turmoil would be too much for most people. The whole tragic circumstances should have been avoided.
Personally I’m now very happy for him he’s finally allowed to live the life he’s always wanted to.

Just into season 4 and reckon Gillian Anderson is overacting. Still enjoyable though.

Season 1 and 2 were my favourites though.

They both came to Houghton, one of my earliest memories was waiting outside Greenhows on Newbottle St waiting for them to come round the corner.

I know what you mean. I liked her at first but the acting is a bit one dimensional.

Just watched episode 7. Was a bit ‘meh’. Hopefully picks up after it.

I get the sense of an impersonation, rather than the character. As an impersonation it is excellent, but once I have seen it once that is enough, she doesn’t need to remind me every scene.

She is an excellent actress generally.

Only one episode in on S4 but, Anderson is a bit annoying as Thatcher - is that genuinely how she spoke? And Diana looks about 12!

She got her mannerisms down but she probably overdid her voice, I had to look up on YouTube just to check, I can remember Thatcher speaking on the news in the 80s and wanting to kick the TV whenever I heard her voice, but definitely not as butt clenching as she was in The Crown.

Revived the economy. Replaced the death trap coal mines.
Got to be completely blinkered not to see that.

It was the way she went about it. There is no question the coal mines needed to go, but those jobs weren't replaced nor were means for people to re-train. She wasn't bothered that she put thousands out of work and decimated the local economies that depended on the money from them. Because of that adults of working age became long term unemployed. Their kids saw parents not working, so work ethic dropped and now you have whole families where no one works. Labour then gets blamed for spending money supporting them winning the tories votes.

the episode with the cousins and Margaret ?

I thought it was superb, harrowing, sad and really interesting tele

To be fair to the Royals, putting handicapped children or adults into institutions was pretty much the normal thing to do whatever your social status. I know from working at a local psychiatric hospital that many of the older patients had spent most of their lives in those institutions and would find it virtually impossible to function in the normal world.

That doesn’t mean that they had miserable lives as most were more like care homes are now, so the patients would have excursions and organised entertainment and be free to roam in the grounds alone or with supervision if they needed it. There were few locked doors. This is a complete contrast to modern hospitals which almost universally have locked doors and a much more unstable and sometimes violent population.

We need to be careful that we don’t demonise anyone from that time as we don’t really have much knowledge about what was normal for that period.

Thatcher deliberately worked on her voice once she was Prime Minister. She was quite shrill in the early days but toned it down a lot as the years went on. Even the Queen has changed her voice from the very, very RP that she used to be as a young woman, to a more mellow version.

spoiler alert for anybody who hasn’t seen episode 7.

I’m not demonising them, I weirdly get the queen mother’s explanation.
it was just incredibly sad that those 2 poor woman where left yet they fully knew who they were and who their family was.

of course I’m only going off what I watched but it was undoubtedly sad viewing.

Up to S4 Ep9. It's like the Tiger King now. Everyone's a complete arsehole.

They've got Di off to a tee mind. Dumb as a rock, annoyed by the press but loving every second of the attention at the same time. Charles has had a midlife crisis from age 18 to age 60.

The only one who's come out of this series looking good is Phil

Binge watched it all and had it finished on Tuesday

Nobody’s mentioned her yet but I really like Erin Doherty as Princess Anne. Surprised they didn’t cover the attempted kidnapping at gun point though.
I thought that was a missed opportunity. Maybe they did and decided to cut it? One thing I found interesting was that Fagan got in twice. I’d forgotten that

good point re Anne. There’s a lot to go at but that easily could have made it in

Margaret’s all right, just a tortured soul.

I still hugely sympathise with Charles massively. I also like the Queen as a person despite her mad faults.
As a huge republican, I never thought I’d say that !
