The Crown

I think she's a brand new actress too. Better looking than Diana mind.

It’s weird but even though I was all team Diana at the time, she irritates the hell out of me now with her mannerisms and comes across as sly and manipulative. There again she was a teenager so it sort of goes with the territory, one minute all sweetness and light, the next the devil in disguise plotting god knows what mayhem.

She was too young for him, and he was too old for her. It’s a real shame.

I think it's fair to say Charles is an arsehole.

There is an episode in S3, Aberfan, if that doesn't touch you there is more iced water running through your veins than in Lizzy's.

The Aberfan episode from S3 and the Michael Fagan one from S4 are the best episodes of their respective seasons and could be watched as standalone TV movies.

Overall I thought S4 was OK. Gillian Anderson was trying too hard with the Thatcher impersonation. Compare this to Jason Watkins' portrayal of Harold Wilson from S3 which was utterly believable. Best performance was easily Emma Corrin despite this being her first major role. She had some of Diana's looks and mannerisms spot on. Sometimes it helps casting an unknown actor as they have no previous baggage - I couldn't get out of my mind that Thatcher was Dana Scully. I don't know who the actor was but whoever played Dennis Thatcher also had him perfectly.

Lots of content to cover in S5 - the Windsor fire, several divorces, the Annus horribilis, Diana's death (sorry for the spoilers!), Mr Blair turning up and maybe the deaths of the Queen Mother and Margaret if they go that far.

Helena Bonham Carter portrayal of Margaret is very good, especially in episode as she struggles with her mental health discovers members of her family locked away, kept out of sight. I have to be honest I was quite shocked at the treatment they would have received but I suppose decades ago mental health problems and learning disabilities in high society were treated as it was something to be ashamed of.

This series, no doubt because it's coming more up to date, is getting a lot of criticism about its portrayal of characters and storyline. Personally I don't mind some dramatic license - the Royals' behaviour towards Thatcher, or Mountbatten penning a letter to Charles just before he goes off to his death, or Michael Fagan sitting on the Queen's bed. Of course there has to be some allowances in the name of drama, although some, such as Charles phoning Camilla daily and Diana forgetting to curtsy to the Queen were pushing it a bit.

The Crown creator defends decision to include historically unsubstantiated Charles plotline

I think they’ll probably go her golden jubilee, as they reversed the decision to cut it to 5 seasons and went back to 6.

If S4 ends late 80s, they’ll probably do what, 88-97, then 97-02?

I don't think Charles deserves my sympathy, personally.

each to their own but i hugely sympathise with Charles. He’s been shat on continuously by his own close family.

A dad who didn’t particularly love him
Sent to a school in Scotland not cut out for him
Sent off to Wales when he was settled at Oxford.
Not being able to be with the woman he loved.

he’s a real tragic case and his resentment of it all was ultimately took out on Dianna. The whole tragic outcome could have so easily been avoided really.

is 5 not the last season ? I thought that was confirmed.

S4 ended at Christmas 1990.

If they do finish in 2002 with the Golden Jubilee or the QM's death then that would make a lot of sense. From memory, not a lot happens in the early 2000s until William/Kate come along and they've said that they don't want to go too recent.

It was 6, then 5, then 6 again as of July 2020.

Ah, I'm only on episode 8, couldn't tell from the synopsis when exactly it ended.

As of July this year they were looking at 6 seasons. I assumed the jubilee would be a symbolic event to close on, but perhaps you're right and they'll go longer.

Some people need to realise that it is fictional representation of events not a documentary.

I take your point. He could have just sealed the deal with Camilla though.
No cos she wasn’t ‘good enough’ for him when they first met, then she was married ....
I don’t recall the exact chronology. It’s easy to write these people off based on the 2D portraits we are given from the official palace releases and the press’s ‘unbiased’ takes but they are complicated people thrust into situations that us plebs have never encountered so it’s easy to judge but I wouldn’t want to swap places with any of them.

Imagine being told “you’ve GOT to marry, and hurry up about it as you’re not getting any younger cos we need an heir. She has to be upper class and English and Anglican and a Virgin with no suspicious background but not related as we don’t want any further inbreeding and she has to be able to get sprogged up sharpish. Now you can shag around a bit as all daft young lads do but you better not get caught and you definitely better not get anyone up the duff. Remember EVERY move you make will be on camera and scrutinised in depth by the public. Have fun!”

Finished episode nine last night and I have really found this series quite gripping to watch at times. Quite a few stand out moments. Gillian Anderson was very good as Thatcher, I even noticed she had her walk down too, also I noticed her appearance at the start of the episode it took me back to the time when I saw Thatcher on TV at that time and thinking she looked worn down, Anderson really gave an impression of a woman worn down by the weight of the 11 years on her shoulders.

Josh O'Connor and Emma Corrin were brilliant as Charles and Diana in the last episode. Charles utter contempt (and possibly hatred) for Diana towards the end of their marriage was gripping to watch, especially Charles' spiteful tirade towards Diana. As people have said we can only imagine what actually happened between them, like @Darlo1973 has said this is a fictional representation of events, probably a lot of their fighting has probably been heightened for dramatic purposes, but that has what made it a good TV drama.

Mind you, in series 3 I had some sympathy towards Charles with the treatment he received from his family with Camilla etc. But as this series went on any sympathy I had for him quickly evaporated, he acted like a spoilt brat who wasn't happy that he wasn't getting his own way. The way he treated Diana was really unforgivable (mind you she was just as bad too!).

I am sure the conspiracy theorists will pick up on the thinly veiled threat by Phillip to Diana, when they were talking and she told him she wanted to leave.

I cannot wait to watch Series 5 when it comes out now, when we get to see Imelda Staunton as Elizabeth and Jonathan Pryce as Phillip.

Dominic West is supposed to be coming on board as Charles for series 5 and 6. Not much of a physical resemblance but he's a excellent actor and it's amazing what a wig and false ears can do.
