We had plenty of problems and that was one of them. I don't really buy the narrative that we'd have been fine if we had a good keeper (though it is possible we would have stayed up). To suggest Steele is the main reason we're in League one though is nonsense.

He was certainly a factor though. Grayson had £1.25m to spend and nearly all of it went on him and Vaughan.

He was definitely a factor. But everyone's a factor to some extent. Grayson was a bigger factor for me, so was Coleman, Short, Camp, every arsehole on big wages and causing a problem (Rodwell mainly). Then there was our entire dreadful defence of loans, Darron f***ing Gibson and of course Vaughan and Ashley Fletcher. Not to mention David Moyes who I blame more than any of that list.

Steele was shite though. But we were dreadful and absolutely toxic behind the scenes to go with it.

And to think if we had McLaughlin between the sticks that season we wouldn’t have dropped to this crap division. The fact we spent money on Steele is still baffling to this day.

The keeping was terrible, but if we had take the DNA of Buffon, Schmeichel, Banks and Yashin and used it to create the perfect goalkeeper, we would still have struggled that season. We were absolutely shite.
