[3rd Test] England v Pakistan (Rose Bowl)

i think it is or at least was fair to question his selection given that up until these last few matches his batting record in red ball for england was keeping wicket was pretty damn poor. you add average wicket keeping to that and i think ben foakes had all the right in the world to expect to be given a chance. he has grabbed his chance mind
I agree it was fair and buttler himself had doubts until he got a decent innings. Now that has happened twice imo only injury sees him out of the side. That’s not denigrating the others available just how I see it

tried to find the exact stat i heard on tms googled turned up this - from mid july (so it may have got better or worse)

In the seven Tests since he was officially installed as England keeper instead of Jonny Bairstow, Buttler has averaged just 18 with the bat

but just like 7 games was seen as too early to write him off, i'd argue two good knocks is too quick to commit to him for life

i think it's more than stokes is seen as an exceptional fielder, so it's assumed he is excellent in the slips, as you'd assume the latter if the former is true.

you can argue whether he really is an amazing fielder or whether he makes the occasional incredible catch almost nobody would. there are stats around about how many drops he has compared to others, but you'd also argue that perhaps alot of those drops most players wouldn't drop... because they wouldn't get the chance to

Are we misusing him then? Is he better in outfield positions where catches could still be had, like gully or somewhere? Obviously bowler and field dependent.

i'd like to think the england management team can make that decision better than the likes of us

points to remember - his worldy catches are almost all outfield rather than slip and in pyjamas not whites.
shot selection in one day is very different to red ball. if you move him out of the slips, where more balls go to in red than white you'd need to replace him with someone as good or better.
is he the best slip catcher england have?
the position you put your best fielder/s in red and white are different.

as for the stokes/buttler argument it's also worth pointing out that even if stokes was the worst fielder in the world he would still be in the team, arguably even if he was purely a batsman or purely a bowler.

buttler has not 100% nailed down his place in the team with either gloves or (more controversially) bat, certainly at least until the last week or so

..

yasir looking anything but confident here

368 the lead, 169 needed to avoid the follow in

say when the new ball comes we take the last 4 for 60 runs. Lead over 300. Shirley the follow on is enforced?

You'd think so, but modern captains have a habit of batting again, mostly because of the Aussies and losing that Test in India.
