Sopranos fans

I remember when it first aired, there was hell on.... people feeling cheated out of a proper ending!!
I'm not surprised
It was on a par with GOT

Mind, I wasn't that impressed with Sopranos. The two "captains " put me off it. Both of them were like cartoon characters. The one with the daft white stripes in his hair and the one who looked like he permanently had a coat hanger in his jacket both seemed to overact in every seen. It's a shame as the rest of the cast was spot on
I felt let down by the ending like.
It was poor

It was a deliberate move by the writers to deprive the viewer or the satisfaction or impact of seeing our favourite curiously endearing sociopath finally thwarted. We watched as he got away with it for years (most of the other diners in the restaurant had appeared in earlier episodes, each wronged by Tony and the Soprano crime family on some level), we weren't able to see him fall.
Also, the whole series is centered around Tony. Once he dies, we immediately lost our link into his world.

Was he a sociopath though? Not sure about that

I'd say he fits the bill, broadly speaking. Charasmatic, with aggressive tendencies, a manipulator with a lack of respect for social convention, rule of law or the impact of his actions on others though, yes, aspects of his character would suggest him being more complex than a one note cardboard cutout of a master criminal. Its these complexities and nuances, all the layered details that make the show as great as it is. Always seem to pick up on something new each time I rewatch an episode.

Indeed, thing is he cared about people, his family especially, but yes its complex. I think from my point of view he gave people a chance but he was head of a Mob family so he had to do the required when it came to that. There are plenty of cases in the series when he put off killing somebody as long as was humanly possible, so its not a straight off for me he is a sociopath.

It was the importance of family and cultural tradition that made me think twice about the sociopath label.
Could be best summed up perhaps with the Tony Blundetto saga. He knows the detrimental effect on his business interests, as well as violent reprisals to Christopher and others, would be devastating and thus he has to give him up. But he loved Tony B, they grew up together and he didn't want him to suffer torture at the hands of Phil, so shooting him in the face with a shotgun was essentially, to him, an act of love. And then there's how Christopher met his end. I was genuinely shocked by both instances.

Glad that Schirripa has somewhat toned it down compared to the first few podcasts. Was getting annoying to the point of it being seriously distracting but seems to be a nice balance between the pair of them now and tend to listen to each new episode every Monday as soon as I start work.

yes those two cases, also others, its mad the conflict going on in his character, what made the series really, also Meadows boyfriend who went mad dealing drugs, the Ralfie thing which was a whole other story.

Not seen the early ones yet I jumped in later. On the one now where they are talking about Junior going down for the "cunnilingus", cracking me up

Tony cared more about animals than people (Reaction to Chrissy killing Cosette, Pie o My, when he found out the family dog was gassed etc etc ) - apart from himself. This came to also infect Carmella.

The ambiguity ran all the way throught the show not just the ending.

The Pine Barrens episode, which is regarded by many as a classic, did not resolve what happened to the Russian. Chase's reaction to that ......... " Who give a F*** about the russian - maybe he climbed up a tree"

It left the scene open for you to imagine what happened. Just like the ending.

Best TV crime drama.
