16/17 when we were both in the championship
Not when the season began they didn't, they panic buyed a load of shite in January which included, Hogan (9.5M), Bree(3.5M), Hourihane (3.5M), Lansburys (3M), Bjarnsson (2m) and finished 13th.

When the season kicked off, as mentioned, NUFC broke the Championship transfer for most money spent, by miles aswell.

Wage bills are more binding than transfer fees. It’s a bigger indicator of how much a club spends.
True, but can be distorted by some large short term deals (see Ibra at Man Utd). I prefer amortization (transfer fee/contract length). Not sure if this will work...

I don't think he is cherry picking a period, he is talking about his period not the entire history of NUFC. He hasn't been going to the match since 1955 he's been going since the 90's.
His experience of supporting Newcastle is they were a good side and regularly in Europe until Ashley came along. It's understandable he will be itching to get back to how things were pre Ashley for him.
So He's been spoilt then - he needs too get used to the idea of your being average🤣

Tranmere were frequent visitors to Wembley in the early 90's. Is this relevant or irrelevant to my mate's (who started watching them then) current expectations?
They can hope for a return to it, they can realistically say that it's not beyond the club. In terms of expectations? I guess it's relevant, but it becomes less significant as time moves on. The early 90s was >25yrs ago. By comparison, Newcastle stopped being a European regular 13 yrs ago.
The Leicester model .... Aye sounds easy why dont all clubs do this

Prat
Because not all clubs have Leicester's finances, not all owners see it as the best way for their club to operate, not all owners have aspirations or ambitions as lofty.

Plank.
Stop being daft. Newcastle have competed with those 3 teams and you know they have.
Brighton's ambitions are beyond Ashley's for Newcastle. They've pumped millions into their training facilities, their stadium, they've a more joined-up, ambitious approach to recruitment, to managerial appointments.

Watford are part of a larger footballing entity and will benefit from the relationships that that brings.

Do transfers in January not count now?

They will still never win fuck all. Liverpool and City etc are light years ahead of them in every single department and always will be
Could have said the same about Man City but swapped Liverpool and Man City, for Chelsea and Man Utd. Always is an awfully long time. Who, in 2010, could have predicted that the Premier League table in 2020 would have been topped by an undefeated Liverpool, reigning champions Man City and f***ing Leicester? That Wolves and sheffield United would be above Arsenal and Spurs.

You will never be better than Liverpool or Man City its as simple as that
The same City who until got major investment were nowhere to be seen ?

Yeah and who are now light years ahead of Newcastle and always will be

Depends which way you want to look at it.

To me, a club looking to activley get themselves promoted back at the first time of asking would ensure that they have everything in place at the start of the season for when it begins. In doing that, Newcastle broke the Championship transfer record to do so. This resulted in promotion.

Aston Villa spent 35% of their entire transfer records in January in a panic buy situation to try and salvage their season resulting in them finishing 13th.

In either instance, at the time, at the end of the summer transfer window, Newcastle broke the Championship record spending at that time.

The Barca game, so often referred to on here was 22 years ago. Football has moved on enormously in 13 years so NUFC being European regulars is as relevant as a Tranmere fan harking after Wembley visits, a Hibs fan harking after 1970's European trips or a Bury fan reminiscing about going to the match. It's less than 10 years since Sunderland beat Chelsea away 3-0...ancient history and irrelevant.

Villa spent c£55m in the summer, Newcastle spent c£57m.

Lunch break...since Man Utd were the first team to play in Europe in 1955/56 the mags have been in Europe 16 times, and not 49 times. For comparison LFC (44/21 and EFC, who you are way bigger than apparently 17/48). It is easy to cherry pick a period like you have - where you only missed two years but most clubs can find a purple patch, e.g. for the same number of 13 seasons from 1899 onwards Sunderland were in the top 3 seven times....its irrelevant to today.

Mags 16/48
Sunlun 1/48
