Has to be Villa really although they’ve actually had European success. Both clubs immensely successful at the start but never lived up to it again

history only means we USED to be a big club

much like Britain used to rule the world

it doesnt mean we are a big club now

the majority of our success is older than the NHS...

Sheffield Wednesday , big club , won lots of trophies but a long time ago now. Someone mentioned Palace , SAFC are much bigger

As far back as I can remember the best supported clubs in England have been Man Utd, us (Newcastle) and you lot. That's how I judge the size of a club, on the size of the support. If not entirely so, then it's a major contributing factor. I can't think of a single club that would command a similar support to Newcastle and Sunderland given our relative lack of success. Sunderland's last meaningful trophy was 1973 and ours was 1969. Nobody else even gets close in my view. Lots of clubs are capable of getting big crowds, home and away, but we do it regularly year in year out. Sunderland's support is nothing short of magnificent, home and away. That's from a Newcastle fan. I don't think there's anything between us in terms of club size. Both clubs have enormous potential and I'd like nothing better than to see us fighting it out near the top of the premier league... as long as it was us top and you lot second like. Having said that, I'd rather we were in the Northern League than owned by these Saudi *****.

I can’t think of another club that is like us in every aspect. Our support is unusual as the worse we get, the better our support.

Big home games in cups we can’t sell out yet obscure league games we get huge crowds.

Eh? Premier league you had around 41k.

In the champo there was hardly anyone there. Official attendances of 26k but in reality about half that, as said on this board at the time also

We have won the league more times than Wolves and West Ham have combined.

Its hard to define what is a “bigger club” or, at least, definition is subjective.

The way I look at it is a simple count of trophies will tell us who are the most successful club - which what you’ve done - we are well up there along with Preston and Huddersfield. But this doesn’t necessarily mean “big”.

Equally a simple analysis of the current league table tells us who are the best teams. We are way down.

I define “big” as a bit of a hunch or a view of where the club is most likely to be in 25 years time all things being equal (no mental takeovers or freak golden generation teams). Bournemouth will be relegated and never seen again, Norwich will still be to yoyoing, Sunderland will be higher than where we are now. This is taking a view of all clubs long term resources - fans is huge in this regard, but it’s not the only thing. The wealth of those fans and the attractiveness of that geography as a place to live are also considerations.

Honestly, I think in 25 years time we’ll be below Man U, Liverpool, Arsenal, Spurs, Chelsea, Man City, Newcastle, Villa, Leeds, Everton and West Ham. So I think we’re twelfth biggest in the land in the way I define “big”. After us, in my view, is Wolves.

My top 15

Liverpool and Manchester United are the 2 biggest in England

Then Arsenal

Then in the next tier it's Newcastle, Everton, Villa, Tottenham,Leeds and now also Man City and Chelsea.

Then in the next tier I would say Sunderland, both Sheffield clubs, Forest, West Ham

I think West Ham moving to a new stadium put them well ahead of us mind. 55k season ticket holders.

Sheffield Wednesday are a more realistic comparison.
We've recently had bigger average attendances over a season which was bigger than their biggest ever home attendance until they moved. Both well supported clubs difference is they haven't been ran in as disasterous way as we have for sustained periods.

Leeds massive following but didn't get as many through the gates as we did in third tier. One city club but a lot of rugby and cricket fans around. They've spent 16 years outside the top flight and they've spent more time outside the top flight than in it.
