The A66

I'd say more traffic uses the a66, its a shorter route if you're heading to the West of Scotland from the south
Probably but being selfish dueling the a69 would make my trips down to my mums a lot easier. Plenty of lorries on it as well. Would connect 2 big areas as well (West of Scotland and North East of England).

i go across the a66 at least once a week in the wagon and it's improved a lot over the years however to dual it even more seems like a bit of waste of money. there are few bottlenecks nowadays and you only get held up for a few miles at most before you hit another bit of dual carriageway.
the biggest improvement of all to traffic flow was a couple of years ago when they increased the speed limits for hgv's from 40mph to 50mph. in my experience folk are quite happy to sit behind doing 50 whereas before doing 40 there would always be quite a few risky overtakes. this speed limit also has what is known as friday rules where it increases to flat out!!
the a1 going up to berwick is another much improved example. that is until you reach scotland and in their infinite wisdom have kept the 40mph limits for no reason other than to be different imo.
for me if they want to chuck money somewhere the a69 would be a much better road to improve after hexham.
better still don't do it at all and give it to people.

It can be awful in summer though. Last two times I've gone across in summer been stuck after Brough/Warcop way.

Good news albeit belated. The last time they added the dual sections it trimmed 15 minutes off the Journey. Especially pleasing that they are doing an underpass at Kemplay Roundabout at Penrith as it was a reet pisser to wait 20 minutes there some nights after having a smooth ride over

If the new bypass past Haydon Bridge hadn't been built there's a good chance it could have been the a69 that got done. With that shitty little village across the penrith side still having the 66 going striaght through it, that will get more priority unfortunately
