When the DLI saved Western Civilization.

That's a great podcast. They were talking about Sicily the other day and Operation Fustian. The Paras took a bridge and then lost it to the German Fallschirmjäger. They were probably the best trained infantry the Germans had. The next day the DLI took the bridge back.
.
Primosole Bridge! Smashed the German fallshirmagen.

My great uncle died in Normandy, was awarded the MC in 1943 in Sicily, I've a copy of the letter from his commanding officer noting the events that led to him being awarded the MC, being dropped off in the wrong location & still took there objective.
RIP Uncle Spike
What's the best way to post images on here, I've got the letter on my phone, just need to upload it?
Got a few photos aswell.

That's where my Great Uncle won his MC, I've just posted the letter of comendation, the photos are from Normandy when he was injured, returned to service but was killed by a shell burst. RIP Uncle Spike

Yeah I loved the grounds outside. Durham generally was a great place for a kid to grow up. The riverbanks in autumn and winter were like a secret world you could disappear into
Not literally I hope
Absolutely..I went through in 2014 with my Dad and Uncle..fascinating place..I spoke to some of the old lads when I was there..I wanted to find out a bit more about my Great Grandfathers regiment and they pointed me in the right direction..shocking it’s closed like.
Loads of ex military groups used to meet there for talks etc
Scandal that it closed
They were part of the liberation of Belsen
They were part of the liberation of Belsen too

Aye mate..when I was through I was gobsmacked at the campaigns the DLI were at..the place itself was beautifully laid out..there was one of them howitzer type guns and on the display it said that a DLI soldier was actually killed whilst manning it..has the museum been relocated anywhere?
