Over hyped films

1917, well made but boring.
Dunkirk, well made but didn't get the sheer scale of it for me, looked more like a couple of coachloads of the beaches.
Said this at the time - it suffers from just being the latest of a similar string of films, arguably starting with Saving Private Ryan.
Nothing has "blown that away" to date.

This is an example of when everyone at least quite likes a film and no one really thinks it's shit, which generates this weight of mass opinion. It puts it ahead, especially on things like IMDb and so on, of films that a lot of people absolutely love but others didn't get on with
Re shawshank
I also think people somehow view it as clever - maybe because of its length and feel. A long clever film, must be really good, surely

All these comic book films - bloody rubbish. The comics were not that good either. It was just we had nothing else. Dandy or the Beano.

Harry Potter - never heard of that until the film came out.

Lord of the rings - not more bloody fairies...

Same question could be applied to Independence Day and Avatar which have both been mentioned a few times.

Independence Day was reasonably popular when it came out and Avatar was successful and even nominated for best picture. The popular consensus of Phantom Menace was that it was an absolute steaming heap of shit. Mind you, there are people who defend the prequels now but I put that down to some kind of mental delusion
I might be watching it this afternoon with the kids. For their own knowledge

Have they done something to upset you?
