Yes, but I remember a situation whereby for a brief period Manchester United felt like the enemy.

It would not be good if our rivalry became more like a Real Madrid / Getafe situation.

Maybe there could be a cup draw in the future between the clubs? If so the BBC can jump on it, complete with Ronny Radford library pictures and do all the cliches of giant killings, David and Goliath, plucky minnows against gilded big boys.

Of course I exaggerate to emphasise my point but is such a scenario not the most likely playbook for the next time these two clubs play each other?
Have you f***ing heard yasel man

wasnt long ago you pretended to be a safc fan you absolute dribbler

I dont get this bitterness towards Newcastle crack. I like the city, my Daughter lives there, it looks impressive as you come over the bridge and it's a good night out
With regards to football, there's nothing to be bitter about imo.
Sensible considered thoughts. Rare and a bit disarming to read them.
before having these huge ambitions maybe beating your rivals whenever you play them would be a good starting point for you.
That would necessitate two consecutive delegations which is the opposite of ambition.

We have had plenty of UEFA cup campaigns too tbf. Made the knockout stages of that about 4 times off the top of my head too.

History' says that the 10 years pre Ashley we were in Europe for 9 of them years.

13 years with Ashley we have been in Europe 1 year. That's the problem
History says your average league position under Ashley is 14th.

The previous 50 years your average league position was 16th.

Under Keegan you finished 23, 3, 6, 2, 2, 13th in the pyramid then it was back to finishing mostly anywhere between 10th an 20th with one or two exceptions under Robson.

The Keegan and Robson years were the anomaly.

Even I burst out laughing at that one from him

Fair one but you must have some understating why people like myself who were born late 80s/ early 90s and grew up with that version of NUFC are "deluded"

We were quite far apart in the mid 30s to the the late 40s,obviously the war had something to do with it, but when you twats were in the 2nd division, we were champions, runners up, fa cup winners and charity shield winners.
They were the days. Global depression, Fascism leading to the war to end all wars and Sunderland’s last claim on being a dominant force in English football.

I’m getting so nostalgic I might read some Steinbeck and then watch re-runs of Jesse Owens disproving the eugenic assumptions of Aryan supremacy at the 1936 olympics.

Of course I can understand why people brought up in the Keegan years think this but you have fans much older and who should know better who think this should be the norm.

A) nobody other than bandwagoners ever thought of Man U as the enemy. Title opposition certainly but never anything more.

B) Man U not once give a fuck about NUFC other than we were likewise title opposition for a short period of time.

If you are comparing Ashley's tenure it would be more reasonable to compare it to the 13 years before not the previous 50 unless you are talking to a chap in his 70's.

We all view these things through our own individual lens. I am old enough that my memories supporting NUFC goes back to the 70's so my view of NUFC's lets say natural position will be vastly different from someone supporting them since 1992.

If you are a 16yr old Leicester fan that has been going since you were 10 you will probably see your clubs as one of the big clubs because that's all you know.

Agree but you have fans old enough to know your true position in the pecking order who think Barcelona are your rivals man.

If we are to talk of bandwagons it is wrong to reference 1993, you need to go back to 1982.

The bandwagon started for me in 1982, as a 5 year old, with the arrival of twice Ballon D’or winner, Kevin Keegan against QPR.

Folklore says he struck the ball but the Gallowgate end sucked it into the net. It was that day that Kevin Keegan showed me this is “more than a club”.

It showed the power of positivity and charisma that one great man can create. There was many years of non-glory that followed but the club never lost the magic that one man created 38 years ago.

I think the fact people want to pay £300 million for a broken club is entirely due to Keegan releasing the genie from the bottle in 1982.

I hope the messiah comes back as an ambassador. I owe it to my children, after years of Ashley imposed exile, to show them the club Keegan created.

I remember it well, prior to that i used to go with my dad and that was the season i started to go with my two mates, was a great day

To be fair if it wasn't for the uniqueness of the support and passion at NUFC I doubt a player like Keegan would ever have came and then he wouldn't be manager and we may well have been languishing in the lower leagues for the last 25 years.
Precisely my point. The club would never have become a major player in the first decade of the Premier League or would never have been the target of a £300m bid without Keegan.

If the future is to be defined by being a big player in the upper echelons of English football it can all be traced back to him.

That is the reason there will be euphoria if he returns to the club as a figure head ambassador.
