A victory for freedom of speech.... and sanity

he sounds like a bit of a dick tbf.

we really need to stop thinking we're some sort of America jnr, with a massive sense of entitlement and chips on our shoulders. free speech this, snowflake that. considering one of the biggest points of Brexit was preserving our British values, we haven't half turned into a country of complete fannies (on both sides).

whatever happened to a bit of humility and a level of respect for each other?
I don't see this issue as a sides thing. Freedom of speech should be a human right in a free country. I don't get why the police have got to get involved over a tweet that's clearly a joke.

we don't live in a free country. we aren't America. i don't understand why people keep acting like we are some kind of republic free state. freedom of speech doesn't mean you can go around being a dick.

Is everyone applauding free speech here? Or agreeing with his sentiment?

Well we should live in a free country, surely that's the goal of a western liberal democracy.

And yes it does mean that to an extent.

You can go around being a dick now.

I can call you a cvnt, I can say all newcastle fans are the biggest wankers on the planet and i hate them.

I HATE THEM.

If that's not a non-crime hate incident... literally saying you hate a group of people... then I don't know what is.

Our laws on hate speech are backwards and not fit for purpose.

What is his sentiment?

I've only read the limerick but in it he is dismissive of transphobic people. Freedom of speech is a great thing but sometimes people seem to be shouting about freedom of speech, so they can justify unpleasant things being said. I'm just trying to work out what's being celebrated in this instance. The freedom or the abuse

Freedom of speech tends to be only about defending unpleasant things.

Because no one complains about speech they agree with.

It's like shami chakrabarti said "Everyone is happy to have their freedom of speech, it's other people's they don't like"

but the argument in favour of it goes far deeper than if that guy wants to be a dick he can be.

Yeah I get that. I was just trying to understand why this and any other negative transexual story gets people so excited

Aye that.

why do you hate them? for example, i bet there's a few more obvious ones about Middlesbrough and their sexual relations which could be upsetting for people who are genuine victims of said thing.

you might not mean to upset people, but you still can. taking a second to think about other people really isn't that hard.

fwiw he's clearly taking the piss. he's shared something thinking its funny and its offensive to people from that community.

It's always good to get the full facts and this is an appalling case, not to mention a massive waste of resources/money. Pathetic antics by the Police force involved.

is it, or is it the antics of those who feel as though they are victims. who is going to tell them they are being soft and to shut up.

perhaps those who have lost their jobs for wearing a crucifix can now get their jobs back.

how will it affect the recording of such instances and if the police cannot take action, why do they need to record and use staffing to investigate or take any action.

the judiciary are using a sledgehammer to hammer the police.

why not use that sledgehammer to attack those committees / groups who make such rules that the officers have to follow or otherwise they will be disciplined and perhaps lose their jobs.

why cant people not be rude to each other even if a person different from you

That's a good point, ultimately these clowns are to blame.

That's a good point, ultimately these clowns are to blame.

these people who make policy are hidden and are not blamed at all. yet the actual officer gets castigated.

there was a case not long ago where a cop was sacked for not believing a girl was raped. by all accounts he dealt with it fairly and arrested the alleged offender and because of his investigation he believed a rape did not occur.

that is what was reported, now whether it was true or not I dont know. He was sacked for not following force policy, which was to believe the complainant.

so take that further and in todays case, they followed through the complainants complaint and see where it got them. rock and hard place comes to mind
