University lecturers strikes

i very much doubt that staff did that. theyd get in serious trouble for stopping students going about their business. has she not just left the work too late to do?

She's on course for a first in history, she gets into the library at 7am every morning when she's got work to hand in.
Are you suggesting she's lying?
Took a few seconds of googling.

"It is important to know that all staff will not take part in the strike - this means the impact will vary across the university, which will remain open throughout this period, including the library, colleges and student services".

I'm not sure if that's directed at me, but she's at Edinburgh not Lancaster.
Of course it does. As does the lecturers pay and conditions. Both are being compromised by the university. How long are they striking for at her university?

2 weeks.

Employer contribution is about 20% including deficit funding contributions (the 9.6% includes deficit funding contributions as well). No one at the top is in USS, they’ll all be receiving additional pay in lieu of pension contributions.

These strikes are about general conditions though, not USS specifically.

They will only be receiving pay in lieu of pension contributions if they have hit the lifetime allowance and can’t participate in USS. That is a standard arrangement for high earners.

University is like being on the dole but your parents are so so proud of you.

imagine being on strike where you’re gonna spend more time outside of your place of work than you do inside. Silly sausages.

Which describes the 'people at the top' you mentioned in your post. All of our senior academic management get it.

Looks like ours have joined the strikes this time around - no issues with them striking, they've had an increasingly shitty deal for ages now - but the lack of information from the uni IS pissing many off... and I'll be f***ing annoyed if I'm getting the arse end of stupid o clock train to get there for cancelled lectures - not that I think our department would do that to us knowing how many students do some pretty hellish commutes and that ours is a very close-knit course.

As is usual with anything in our uni - pissed off at the university at large's ineptitude, our department does the best they can. Thankfully our first term timetable is so hellish we've covered a hell of a lot of the course content already and it's things like assignment surgeries that will be impacted more than anything else.

Just had an update off the daughter. One of her lecturers has told her that they're actually going on strike for 3 weeks not 2, they've been told by their Union not to tell the students which lecturers are actually going on strike (not all are) but she doesn't think that's fair and told them she is.
The good news is the library will be open, but she will have to cross a picket line to use it.

shes a student, not an employee. there is no picket line to cross.

are you saying students are employed by edinburgh uni??

Are you honestly trying to say that a picket line manned by students only (if that is the case) is not a picket line? It's just semantics, the lecturer called it a picket line to my daughter.
You're just trying to be clever - you basically accused her of lying earlier in the thread by using this strike to hide the fact she'd fallen behind. You're a bit of a sad twat tbh.

You say potaato, I say potaeto, etc.

Does it matter?

There is a picket line and they intimidate any student who crosses it. There was one last time.
I suppose there's a chance that you know better than her though.

They’re not allowed to intimidate them. If they are then it can be reported.

Or she could just tell them where to go. Academics are hardly the most intimidating people in the world.

Anyway, they’ve always been perfectly polite at my place.

Daughter goes to Durham and I don't think they even do 30 weeks in a year.. 8 hours contact time a week this year for lectures etc..

Crazy.. they have all become.rackets... you pay night on 5k for accommodation.. you think that's not too bad ..£100 a week .then you go hang on.. it's for 34 bloody weeks
Paying for the name, bit like private education. Pick the cleverest kids, get a good name, pick the cleverest kids, get a good name. And so the cycle continues.

This strikes a disgrace my daughters in her last year at york going to miss her last 8 lectures , they still want there 9 grand though. Why don't the scumbags do something that will effect them or the uni instead of the students futures. Not normally against a strike but this one is so so wrong. Notice they don't strike during the 4 month summer break they get. Universities these days just treat students like a cash cow

Is it not the nature of a strike to cause disruption, show their value to their employers to try for better pay and conditions?

These ‘scumbags’ have just had their pensions slashed and have had under inflation pay rises for many years.

Using your logic they could just strike overnight, but it would be the lamest strike ever. It actually started with short non-disruptive strikes, but these were laughed at by University management, so now they are getting bigger and more disruptive.

They could be on the dole though, so they should be grateful 😄
