Whisky

If you enjoy 60s/70s Macallan the Speyburn is stunning - my last bottle of it, sadly.

Served in a coffee mug too.

and a nice spicy curry to eat before moving onto the malts
Looking at the auction prices for the Speyburn it’s not as eye wateringly expensive as you might expect for 37 year old cask strength malt

Nope, it’s relatively unknown. It wasn’t so long ago you could get it for a couple of hundred though - wish I’d stocked up.

I've never tried buying from any auction sites, how do you find them -any good?

not bought owt yet...registered recently and used this one to gauge how much stuff goes for etc.
The widely available bottles are obviously not worth it due to hammer price and postage ( £10.80 on SWA)

I think relative bargains to be had might be on independent bottlings, particularly those under the radar malts.

Next one starts 17 days time so will have another look ;)

I got another bottle of Speyburn 10 today as I'm enjoying the current bottle and they've dropped the price back to £21 at Booths presumably to clear the remaining stock.

I’d avoid both to be honest.
No other offers ?

Tamnavulin particularly one of those malts with an artificial RRP. Always on offer somewhere and an attempt to make people think they’re getting a bargain.
Cheers, cant remember, think Haig gentleman might be.

to be honest if you’re wanting a bottle for around £20 I’d be tempted to go for the Ben Bracken ( Lidl) or Glen Marnoch
(Aldi) at £17.50

How do people drink theirs? I cant just have 1 glass, I always end up having 3 half tumbler fulls and going through a bottle in a couple of nights. No self control so I dont like spending more than 20 -25 on a bottle.
Had their Islay one and for the money it’s pretty decent
I've had one but cant remember if it was the islay or speyside, had the lidle equivalent and preferred it slightly over the aldi one.

not doing Bruichladdich unfortunately...only there for two full days.
Heard that the Bunnahabhain “ bottle your own“ are interesting. Will also see what Ardbeg, Laga and Laphroaig have available

Probably my favourite distillery if I had to pick one. I've even loved the NAS bottlings I've had, and the 12 is the best bang-for-buck whisky out there.

The lidl (Ben Bracken) speyside is really nice.
Aye, just seen the carton that's the one I had.

I've just bought the Aldi islay never tried it so I'll give it a try after supper. Pop some tunes on on my headphones and a few whiskys once the Mrs. has gone to bed

Sipping the Aldi islay now, first islay I've had, it's ok, the taste is something I've not tasted in whisky, a very strong after taste. Is this peat?

I mixed 50ml whisky with 15 ml water. I've read this brings out the flavour more, could this be why I'm getting such a strong taste.

I'll try 50ml straight next

There’s no absolute formula for whisky to water, it’s subjective to taste. Typically I’ll try a sub 46% whisky with water but mostly drink it neat. it’s worth experimenting with water to find the point at which you get the most enjoyment from the whisky.
