Logan Pye

This is one of the things happening at the club that makes me really f***ing gutted to read.

To see our top rated kids going to these clubs is horrible. Clearly they are showing promise to be going to those, I know these team will chew up and spit out many kids every year in the hope of finding one that's good enough but if one or two of these lads are good enough of be gutted.

There is nothing better than seeing lads come through the academy and doing well, even better if we were ever in a position to keep hold of one to hit their peak. It's different to signing players for big fees.

We seem to losing any chance of that happening in the next few year, with the exception of Mumba.

We were told of the contact from a secretary. The fact we were contacted at all rang alarm bells. Although it’s common practice now, allowing the contact was unheard of then. I’m lead to believe no one (who actually coached or knew Luca) had been consulted. By the time the Academy director contacted us we had already met with Liverpool, visited what we needed to & flew off on holiday.
Something just didn’t seem right if this was the mentality of the new regime, who had just taken over at the time.

The new manager (& higher management) had just arrived. My son never even met the academy director. He was still there when Reid arrived but we had no dealing with him. Yes they could have denied permission.

Thanks.

Anybody sticking up for donald and co on this would do well to read the above regarding the move of one of our youngsters to liverpool.

Do you mean meeting the academy director as he was being looked at by another team or should he have met him anyway? Not being argumentative there genuinely asking what went wrong there.

I'd would have expected the club to try and talk your lad into staying before he went to meet Liverpool and after. But your telling me the club could have just said to liverpool he is staying and it told your family about contact. Again I have no idea what rules are what club has to do so asking out of interest to clear up things I have assumed that could be wrong.
My comment on not meeting the academy director was in response to being asked if I had a problem with the running of the club. My point was the take over had just happened, hadn’t even met the bloke.
But having said that, yes, I would have expected my son to have met him (Not me) as the new director, regardless of whether there was anyone interested or not, but when there was interest, of course I’d have expected it, given he didn’t know my son he would/should have asked some questions.

Yes they could have told Liverpool contact is denied. And we would have been none the wiser. It had happened previously.

So you’re saying that both the club and the player have acted illegally then?

They literally can. Read the rules for fucks sake.

Rules 296-299 specifically state that a club cannot directly or indirectly approach an academy player.

I'll back up slightly, nice to see the FA has mention of indirectly in the bylaws. My background is with the NCAA over here, which has similar rules, but doesn't explicitly mention indirect contact. Even so, I suspect it's naive to think it doesn't happen, illegal or not. Especially if it isn't particularly well enforced.

And there seems to be at least a small loophole in 299, that says "a Club may, not earlier than 31 December next following the commencement of his Under 16 year, offer an Academy Player a contract as a Contract Player upon his attaining the age of 17 year."

Someone said he's 15, so the past year is his under-16 year, here we are a few weeks past 31 December and ... I readily admit I have no way of knowing if that happened in this case.

Thanks.

If that kind of thing is happening now there is absolutely no defence, but if the timing of the incident is when they've just joined the club, haven't really got a first team squad, were dealing with Djilibodji, Ndong, Rodwell et al I can understand why it wasn't top of the priority list as frustrating as it is.

How has it worked out for your lad?

Frustrating to hear Methven and Donald spinning their lies (again) abut being nothing they can do to stop these approaches. They lied so much people begin to believe it and accept losing these prospects.
Methven and Reid can go on about how well our younger age groups are doing, but if we continue to tout them out like we are, the u18s and u23s are going to stay in the same state they are now. The sooner these charlatans sell up and take their mates with them, the sooner the club can look to progress to where it should be.

I’ll be honest. He loves it.
People can say Cat1 is Cat1 but it really isn’t.
The difference, as expected I suppose, is miles apart.
Although even SAFC as a Premier Cat1, there’s was still no comparison.
He’s still a huge Sunderland fan, not a total deserter 😉

Good stuff. Hope it goes well for him. (Would rather it had went well for him at Sunderland mind)

Thank you for coming on here to offer your perspective on things, its very interesting reading. I remember reading something where SD said that all he could do was negotiate sell-on clauses for the young players that are leaving which had me scratching my head a bit. Surely if they're powerless, we don't get to negotiate anything? Do you know what the truth is about that?

Three years ago, our academy was one of the 20 Premier League clubs. The 15/16 year olds who were taken on in 2016 and 2017 were taken on as future premier league players, with a view to loaning them out to L1 and championship clubs for a bit of experience. Fast forward 3-4 years and where are those potential premier league players that should be ripping it up for us in L1 by now? Hulme - L1 standard but no better. Mumba/Kipkioma - not exactly ripping it up and featuring in a woeful U23 side. Embleton - nowhere near L1 standard.

Whilst Reid is in charge now, I would question who has been running, scouting, signing and coaching these kids from 2016 onwards, because collectively they have utterly ruined the academy.

And the parents who see the Prem teams as a more lucrative instant option, even though their kids will get a nice contract but 0.02% chance of breaking into the first team?

Sorry no idea on what sell on deals they can do or have done.. would be interesting though..

Academy players sold and left for minimal funds who would be part of the first team

Honeyman
Asoro
Maja
Sam Greenwood

Michael Woud, Jacob Young both went to Holland and Germany.

I know of five others from similar age groups who went to Liverpool, Man U and Leeds. All recognised by England.

That the future of the club being ripped out.
We got £2M for Asoro and maybe £1.5M for Maja - that is not minimal for players we got free and for minimal fees. Bear in mind we did the same to a Swedish club for Asoro as what is being done to us. The confusing point is what you say above - we can demand compensation and deny Man Utd access to Pye - if that is the case why are Birmingham holding out for £30M and we're not?
