I find it all pretty frustrating that these young players are not given a subs role with the first team....Sessengnon Fulham and Bellingham at Brum regularly played as 16 yr olds .... surely if the likes of Man U are after these players then they are good enough to be involved.
Agents and their parents probably see £££££ and ultimately don't care which club they play for....it looks like the draw of a hometown club doesn't exist anymore or loyalty ....ah well watch this space

I’m still reeling from the time someone on here said I shouldn’t take the piss out of his (frankly ridiculous) name because his dad’s really hard :oops:

If they're too young to sign a professional contract (which i believe this lad was), then no, theres not a lot you can do. He's free to move where he wants.

It's all well and good selling our vision of getting into the first team at League one Sunderland, but Man U are the best academy in the country. Of course he will go.
And also have a good history and current record of youth players hitting the first team.

Yeah it would go up because it's cashflow would improve by £3m per year. That's a hell of a lot easier to value than 'we might produce another Jordan Pickford'
Its total nonsense to believe that. It wouldnt go up by 3 million. Not having an academy does not increase the value of a club. It'll be one of their major selling points when trying to get shot of the club.

It’s got nothing to do with £signs & certainly not loyalty,
It’s about securing the best possible chance of a future for the individual.

Hes not free to move. Regardless we can withhold and demand top compensation

Who handled it badly out of interest ? Was it just the academy or higher up like Hill or even higher than that ? Or did they all have a part to play ?
We were told of the contact from a secretary. The fact we were contacted at all rang alarm bells. Although it’s common practice now, allowing the contact was unheard of then. I’m lead to believe no one (who actually coached or knew Luca) had been consulted. By the time the Academy director contacted us we had already met with Liverpool, visited what we needed to & flew off on holiday.
Something just didn’t seem right if this was the mentality of the new regime, who had just taken over at the time.
Was that just the running of academy in general? Or was it also linked to their apparent willingness to offload young kids? They could have denied you permission to speak to liverpool though couldn't they?
The new manager (& higher management) had just arrived. My son never even met the academy director. He was still there when Reid arrived but we had no dealing with him. Yes they could have denied permission.

There’s never NOTHING that can be done. What the club CAN do is make it clear that there is a pathway to the first team. That means much smaller squad, far less journeyman shite brought in and a genuine unwavering commitment to playing our youth prospects. Of course this is primarily about the club being less of a shitshow. However the fans have a part to play too. How many on here aren’t happy if our senior squad isn’t 23+ in size? How many talk endlessly about bringing players in and very rarely about getting them out? How would we feel if playing kids affected results in the short term? What did we think of Denver when he was finding his feet at the start of the season?

This losing our best young players is getting ridiculous. To try to nip it we should do a few things. Firstly we should refuse permission for other clubs coming in for our young players. However that isn’t even half of it. Doing that without helping these kids careers is just punitive. We should state openly that we are a player development club, that fans need to accept some bumps along the way and then, most importantly, we should limit first team senior squad size to 18 or so. It would actually allow us to spend more per senior head in wages so would also have the byproduct of helping us get a better XI. However the main reason is that it would create opportunities for young players. How many injuries have to happen for a youth to even get a place in the bench right now? It’s madness. We need a differentiator to compensate for our league position. Until we do something along these lines, these players will be better served leaving their families and going elsewhere.

Do you mean meeting the academy director as he was being looked at by another team or should he have met him anyway? Not being argumentative there genuinely asking what went wrong there.

I'd would have expected the club to try and talk your lad into staying before he went to meet Liverpool and after. But your telling me the club could have just said to liverpool he is staying and it told your family about contact. Again I have no idea what rules are what club has to do so asking out of interest to clear up things I have assumed that could be wrong.

All going swimmingly In the youth set up. Cheers Paul Reid
I know of two young lads that played in my lads school team back in the late 80's who went to Manure. One lad,a winger, signed early doors for them and went for a couple of years before being released. I believe he went ,then to Spurs Academy/set up, by this time just turned 20 or so and tried there. Again, he moved on to I think it was Norwich City before he returned home having not made it and began playing locally... Another one, who I thought would really make it big on his skill set, who was at Sunderlands fledgling Academy was turfed out and signed for Southampton. He then moved on to Aston Villa and he to returned home because he missed his family setting. Not everyone makes it , the lad that I thought would ,didn't and the other lad who went to Manure I knew from watching him play and talking with him just didn't have ,imo, the heart or passion to make it big as he could have. Just another statistic that flies the nest is young Pye.

Academy players sold and left for minimal funds who would be part of the first team

Honeyman
Asoro
Maja
Sam Greenwood

Michael Woud, Jacob Young both went to Holland and Germany.

I know of five others from similar age groups who went to Liverpool, Man U and Leeds. All recognised by England.

That the future of the club being ripped out.
