Exposed - The Churches Darkest Secrets

There were (hopefully now “were” and not “are”) certain jobs that attracted certain types of people because it allowed them hushed up access to children. This is one of them and it was always going to happen. Football coaches, teachers who travelled away with kids, swimming pool attendants, scout leaders etc. Obviously not all of them, but it is the type of job that allowed access to children so attracted particular applicants.

Thank goodness the regulations, following documentaries like these and others, have been tightened up hugely. If there is ever a silver lining this is it.

Despite massive work being done in Safeguarding, whistle blowing policies and CRB checking volunteers etc, kids groups that need adult volunteers are now struggling because of the attitude that everyone who worked with or works with children must be like Jimmy Saville. There should be no organisation now that allows hushed up access to children. Parents, carers, other workers, volunteers should be letting the authorities know and nothing should be hushed up.

This is an article about the scouts but applies to other organisations too and mentions the shortage of male teachers for the same reasons.

Men won't volunteer to help the Scouts for one depressing reason: they'll be labelled paedophiles

Anyone watching this about Bishop Peter Ball?

I remember the trial and remember the horrors of the abuse he perpetrated on young boys, 18 kids in total, the youngest of whom was 13, but I never knew about the letters and sustained support he received from members of the establishment, not least the Archbishop of Canterbury and Prince Charles. No consideration for his victims, only him.

Unbelievable to think that he only served 2 years and within a year of his release, was back in schools preaching.
Ah! Charlie carrying on Uncle Louie's work, he learned the lessons well.

Prince Charles told Ball in a letter in February 1995, two years after the bishop had accepted the police caution, which was read to the inquiry: “I wish I could do more. I feel so desperately strongly about the monstrous wrongs that have been done to you and the way you have been treated.”

To think that they’re giving Hewitts lad shit at the moment about public perception of them wanting to be away.

I couldn't believe how it was almost like the fellas good behaviour outweighed the terrible stuff.
Connections seem to help some in society

Interesting though that the immediate assumption was that it'd be the catholic church. Have to say that on seeing the listing on the TV last night that was mine too for a split second. As others have said, it's been a feature of any institution where people can gain access to children.

For me still it's the public nature of the establishment figures' response. Without any shame whatsoever.

It was/is overwhelmingly more prevalent in the Catholic Church though so it’s pretty understandable why people assume the perpetrators would be Catholic clergy.

It’s the largest Christian church in the world. It was always going to have a bigger problem than any other religious institution. Purely on the basis of scale.

That is a fair point, but I think certain Catholic practices have lent themselves to the MO of peadophiles. Confession, (apparent) celibacy etc.

There are far more teachers, NHS workers, civil servants, builders, lawyers and restaurant staff than Catholic priests in this country. I’m not aware of a particularly massive peadophile problem in any of those trades or professions as there was with priests.

The problem imho is the celibacy thing. Priests can’t marry which means otherwise normal members of the population can’t do the job which is idiotic. It also means it’s an institution where the sexual misfits and criminals hide themselves.

It will be interesting to see if the current Pope concludes it is a good idea to let Priests marry in future, however he’s coming under a lot of pressure already not to allow this most notably from the previous idiot who reckons noncing is a problem borne of the freedoms of the 1960’s

If you believe that paedophilia in this country was largely the preserve of the Catholic Church then I don’t think there’s anything I can say that will convince you otherwise.

By some distance, the greatest number of sexual offences against children takes place amongst the general populace within the confines of their own homes. Sad, but true. Monsters live amongst us.

Yeah because builders don't have access to and power over children. You said it earlier.
Fair point, so let’s stick with teachers. The Catholic Church’s nonchalance over this happening time and time again is obscene.

Another fair point, but I was making the point about the extraordinary strong correlation (see the webpage I linked) between The Catholic Church priests, who by the way to make it even more sickening profess to be good, and paedophiles

Of course it is. During my schooldays attitudes were disgraceful but since then the profession has got its house in order.

The catholic church is an archaic institution and with that lot it's like turning an oil tanker around. All we can do is hammer the message home time and again. It's nothing that we didn't know before.

“I can’t bear it that the frightful, terrifying man is on the loose again and doing his worst...I’ll see off this horrid man if he tries anything again.”

That's our next monarch writing to Peter Ball - who already had a conviction for gross indecency - about one of the victims he abused.

Can't remember if that was before or after Charles was sorting out a house in the Duchy for Ball and his brother to live in.
The horrid man committed suicide, I'm sure Charlie was relieved.

The programme showed how horrific the establishment is and I don't think much has changed.

The victim's family showed remarkable restraint. If it had been my son I'd probably have ended up in prison
