My aim is to get out more. Bought my first road bike in August and only managed about 10 rides so far due to work and weather but did 61km yesterday in -5c and loved it. Same again tomorrow. Hoping to get to a stage where 100km in a single ride is normal/standard. I'm no chubster and I'm quite fit athletically so shouldn't be an issue, just practice with a new form of exercise that's all (I'm used to running and football).
Good effort that. Won't be many cyclists doing 100km every weekender.

Did an hour of power on the fixie earlier. Did not enjoy.

It's the time more than anything. I cant do it if it takes me 5 hours (family, work etc) but if I can do it in say 3.5 then it becomes feasible. But that takes a massive jump in fitness in my opinion. Unless anyone has any tips?😂 In any case, discovering the enjoyment of cycling on country roads at 33 year old is brilliant and frustrating in equal measure.

Cyclists of the SMB. What have you got planned for this year? Personally, I’m getting out twice a week and getting in the best shape I can for the Australian Police and Emergency Services Games being held in Wollongong in October. That’s my goal, what’s yours?

I've literally just fitted my helmet cam.

The mount I need is on order / out of stock so I had to use wood, double sided sticky tape, a couple of cable ties and picture frame eyelets.

I may look like a Blue Peter outtake is being filmed on top of my bonce but at least I'll have footage of any absolute weapons on the road.
😊

After some advice - got hit by a car this afternoon. Somehow i came out of it with only 4 scratches but the bike went under the car... frame appears ok (pending an expert looking at it), but bars are bent and both wheels buckled to fuck. was a little old lady who took me out, first accident I've ever had - she pulled out at a junction right into me (i had right of way). phoned the police at the scene and after i explained i was unhurt they said to just swap details.

what do i do next? i've got her details, her car and insurance details - she's got my name & address. where there's blame there's a claim etc... i presume i could speak to my own house insurance, or do i deal direct with her car insurance company?

what experience does the wise smb cycling thread have?

If you're claiming anything against her for damage to your bicycle, I would speak to whomever insures you, as soon as you can, today if possible. Never made a claim as a cyclist, but someone did crash into my car recently and my insurer advised me to not have any dealings with the other driver's insurers, to only speak to my own insurer.

I’ve not really set a target this year. I did 5,000 miles last year. But this was mainly commutes. I’d like a few weekends away cycling. My mate has just split with his wife and it looks permanent so he is going to buy a mobile home and go away every other weekend. We’re not far from the West Country.

I was taken out by a car six years ago ish...was a young lad. He accepted straight away it was his fault ( took me and fucked bike home)
at the scene a few witnesses stopped and I got there details...I rang police when I got back. They came out and took details.
Basically lad agreed to pay me if I didn’t get insurance involved. The police made contact and gently advised he’d be charged if he didn’t pay me, which he did a few weeks after

guessing you don’t have bike insurance ?
any other witnesses ?

No & no...

First time in 20 years anything like this has happened. Would prefer offical channels & not to have to try and get cash out of a little old lady, dynamics don't look good. A few people stopped to make sure we were ok, but it was quiet gateshead street and only me & her at the time. she said a number of times the sun was in her eyes and she didnt see me. She's insured with motabilty, so will have to speak to them as my bike took out the plastic round the wheel arch and front plastic bumper when she went over me.

im guessing my only option is home insurance (actually same as car), or her insurance?

Plenty of cycling ambulance chasing type legal bods knocking about.
As a minimum you should at least get your bike sorted...

Wiggle are just one example.

I’m old school where if I go out on
Mountain bike for slow ride I don’t wear helmet .
This morn took Roadbike out and reckon helmet saved me from a very serious injury .
Speeding car cut me off as about to go round a mini roundabout at Hendon and my back wheel just went, had clip in shoes on , head hit ground first then rest of me , couple of deep cuts , lots of grazes , swollen knuckle but No head damage .
Darent check my bike properly til later .
Always wear a helmet

edit - if helmet took a strong impact does it need replacing

Same. Told the board the story if me decking it coming down a steep hill on my commute to work. A fox or lion (unsure which) came out from under a car and wiped out my front wheel. Head hit deck first. Was abiut 0530am so would have been in the road likely dead for a while.

hope ok...don’t think you need to replace helmet if it’s undamaged ( no obvious cracks/splits)
While I know a helmet might not save you if smashed by a vehicle at high speed, I‘m fairly certain there are low speed impacts where wearing a helmet has saved people from serious head damage.

complete no brainier ( no pun intended) why wouldn’t you wear a helmet
cue Walter along shortly to suggest groovy kids like themselves don’t wear helmets.

Should they be compulsory ? Not sure to be honest
Would I ever go out without one ( especially on roads) not a chance

This. I'd ditch the helmet, if it were mine. Hope the injuries are not going to kerb your enthusiasm Fletch. I had a low speed fall, and the idea that you can think quick enough to prevent head hitting the deck is fantasy. Smashed my helmet and impact gave me vertigo for a few days.

Not got vertigo but struggling with the stairs think just very sore hip (hopefully) . Won’t put me off once the spring comes along
