Tesla Motors...

The major car manufacturers are already commiting to hybrids and it won’t be long before they go pure EV. I reckon the majority of children born this year will never drive a petrol or diesel car.
Hybrids are nowt new. The jump to electric-only is a long way off imo.

They aren’t, but Honda and Volvo have already committed to making only hybrids and EVs. Others will follow. We won’t see many petrol only cars on the roads by 2040.
The only way that will happen is if they can be made much more practical and a lot cheaper.

I don’t need to currently own one to see which way the wind is blowing.

What do you drive? A 34 MPG 2012 5 Series I reckon.

Shell must love you

Shell love me way more than that , trust me.

For the record I've had extended test drives in both the Tesla an Jaguar ipace , both very good cars but not 100% suitable for my needs.

Added to which I’d finance one out of taxed income not a heavily subsidised lease agreement, they are still out of reach to most people like me.

As an example the Tesla was in the region of £18k deposit and £900 a month iirc , at the time I was paying about £4500 a year in bik taxes, a no brainer for me.

Went in a Tesla taxi in Amsterdam a few years ago. Was blown away by it tbh. Shame they cost a fortune.

Bloke next door to me just got a Nio seems pretty nice although it is an SUV thing appears to be 40 to 50 grand

Edit and in english

What kind of cost is it to charge a Tesla or another electric car?

Depends where you charge it. The rapid chargers are about 25-35p per KWH I think, some are cheaper if they’re supplied by Ecotricity AND you have your home electric supplied by Ecotricity.

Use the Zap Map website to find points and their costs.

Fair enough that is actually ludicrously expensive! if they don’t meet your needs then you’re right it’s pointless but I do believe they’re the best cars out there and they are the future

Are they not practical enough now? 200-250 miles on a single charge.

Most cost about 4-5 pence a mile. But there's cheap overnight tariffs from electric companies that might be cheaper as well as free charging points at workplaces, shops and supermarkets.

They still aren't suitable for everyone but it is becoming easier to be an EV owner and not having to worry about charging

HM Treasury says that for cars first registered from April 6, 2020, most company car tax rates will be reduced by two percentage points.

That means for a pure electric vehicle with zero tailpipe emissions, company car drivers will be taxed at 0%, paying no BIK tax at all.

Furthermore, the zero percentage rate is also extended to company car drivers in pure electric vehicles registered prior to April 6, 2020, who were already looking forward to a much reduced rate of 2% for 2020/21.

Ok cheers mate. Means I'm not restricted to waiting til April. Hopefully can get something sorted sooner :)
I take it that’s a no then @Les the Scientist ?

where do you get that they are unreliable from? There isn’t many loving parts and not much to go wrong on them, their reliability and safety ratings are superb.

if you do break down, you use the onboard system to summon assistance and they come and get you and take the car to the nearest service centre, all included in the deal.

The only issues I've seen with Teslas are in the US - people been using autopilot and they've been crashing left right and centre. But to me that's down to the driver not the car.

Model 3s are on about 3 months lead in so get ordering.

we went through octopus EV,

good lease deal, discounted smart charger install and if you switch energy supply to them you get 8000 miles free charging For the first year at home overnight.
If you use a Tesla referral code (mine hopefully!) we both get 1000 miles supwrcharging at Tesla charge points (there’s one at washy just off the A1M.)

the lease is more than my current car but come BIK change in April and reduced costs on fuel Ithink I’ll be over £300 a month better off than having a diesel, so who says it’s more expensive!

If anyone needs a Tesla referral code then please PM me. It’s worth it for both of us.

Most won’t have that facility as it’s shit expensive

How involved have you been with car manufacturers? The jump has already been made to be honest, there is no significant development money being out in to ICE cars now. They are all developing a wide range of EVs. They are not daft, they can see the ICE is becoming obsolete by technical development brought on by the commitment to zero new ICEs by 2040 (or earlier in some countries).

Autopilot comes as standard. It’s FSD that’s extra.

I reckon I’ll be in for one in about 3 years, the battery’s are returning decent miles and they’re getting better looking. Hopefully the costs come down as the popularity goes up.
