What's the difference between Sunderland & Newcastle?

Many won't appreciate this, but Sunderland needs a suuceesful Newcastle in order to prosper while the reverse isn't true.
Newcastle is doing alright but if it gets massive investment and really takes off (like Manchester), Sunderland will benefit likewise.

To a certain extent yes. However for every step it improves Sunderland, Newcastle improves by 2 or 3 steps which then leads to further resentment & moaning

Newcastle has basic infrastructure advantages for the modern economy
Proximity to A1 and on rail main line are two
Also this helped set it up as the perceived commercial centre
They are also good backed by the the comical and sub consciously local media look nort etc at putting a positive spin on things and associating themselves with positives in the local hinterland
Look at Gateshead and Newcastle taking the reflected glory of the sage Baltic and angel
Associating itself with the Northumberland coast and country too when it's an inland city
Sunderland media are good at putting a less than optimistic slant on things
Sunderland people are generally realists and Newcastle self promotionists
Look at the reaction to the football
Mags in third division and I dread to think how we would of all suffered

A year later we have secured a £500 million redevelopment deal for Vaux, Sheepfolds and other areas. White collar jobs are coming into the area now.

Our city centre is behind Newcastle but we have plenty to be optimistic about.

did anything come of this? or is a year too little time to tell in these sorts of things?
If that is the big wheel down the quayside then the build has been delayed 6-9 months I heard . I know a lad who has re mortgaged his house To invest in it.
until more businesses can be located into and around the city centre sunderland will remain in decline , the danger is it just becomes another suburb of Newcastle

there's no evidence of regional collaboration ever being fair to Sunderland considering things like one north east or Tyne and Wear development corp, so it's better Sunderland does its own thing. It's fantastic not to be part of 'a regional' mayors area as this would be continuation of what those quangos achieved.
Things need to be focused more as an independent city than an integrated part of Tyne and Wear

Interesting to know how much Sunderland adds to the economy of Newcastle - guessing like the EU we "Sunderland" put more into the regional economy more than we get out. Newcastle has been doing alright for a long time and Sunderland has never seen any benefit as far as I can tell.

Exactly

Sunderland City Centre is one of the worst in the country, absolutely minging.
Mackems are 2 billion times better people than geordies though.

Every single person in Sunderland says the same but nobody knows what to do and how , it’s very sad to see the town in such decline

Feel like a broken record but the railway station needs to be flattened; it's the epicentre of the crapness. The central station would make a canny metro stop but that's all, move the station to Monkwearmouth museum. Sunderland is moving in the right direction but it always feels like it takes forever to see anything. A new footbridge, Vaux, the sheepfolds are all very good but if Debenhams or M&S were to pull out it's two steps back again.

Problem with Sunderland is we don't focus on our strengths.

The City Centres a joke but we have a lovely coastline that is only really comparable to South Shields.

If the council had anything about them they would concentrate on the sea front and I don't mean the recent investment but make it a huge area of Sunderland that's a but more upmarket with variety.

Offer something other places can't. Shields is nice but it's Tacky. Tynemouths lovely but small.

Sunderland cosstline could blow both out the water

Tynemouths lovely but small.

Don't think it's called that anymore - isn't it "Newcastle's coast" - handy that Tynemouth is ok (few decent bars and the beach is nice enough but I don't get the love in) if it was a shit hole the place would be completely distanced by Newcastle.
