Local triathlon club

As per the title. Are they many or even any?

9 months into rehab now and I've been advised to mix up my Cardio with non impact activities such as biking and swimming. I thought the above would be an ideal way to mix then in with a couple of runs I'm allowed to do per week

Did you go?

whats the setup with this?

do you do a bit of each at each session? or swimming one time, running another etc.. ?

whats the time that people aim for to make it worthwile? i noticed the run time is 1 hour for 10k which isn't too difficult on its own, but as part of a triathlon obvioulsy its going to be different.

i'm looking for something to aim for next year, done 2 half marathons in september and enjoyed the training, doing a canny bit swimming now and feel i need a new goal. but if its realistically out of my reach i'll put it to bed now before i get carried away

Are you on Facebook? That's probably the best place to learn about the club.

What run time?

Aye I'll have a look. I do 10k in under 50 mins once a week, and swim a mile in the pool usually about 45 mins, but never done any cycling more than to shields and back. Is the type of thing where the training would need to take over your life? Strict diet, no drinking etx.. ?

How long have you known me? I drink like a fish and eat what I want. I fit training in no problem but I don't have any kids or massive commitments.

Aye me neither, I'm amazed at how much I actually do week on week when I put my mind to it. I'm just not a naturally fit person that's all. I'm going to look into it with a view to starting seriously in January. Swimming, running, pilates (tonight) and 1 gym session per week is going me well for the time being.

Still a bit confused as to what the training sessions actually are. The swimming one for example I take it that it's not just everyone swimming up and down, and that there is some technique guidance and structured goals etc?

don't get frustrated... long term injuries are bloody annoying... but you will come back ... a few people I know took up pillates to ease back in... good luck on your recovery mate

I’ve been doing long course triathlons for the best part of 10 years now. I generally eat what I want. As for drinking, I have never been a big drinker but I kind of knocked it on the head when I train. Unless you like the smell of chlorine with a beer headache.

i've got my mind set on doing one next year now. just gonna train as usual till xmas, then have a week off, then look at joining the sunderland triathlon club. i think its more of a 'want to prove to myself that i can do it' type of achievement, rather than something that i will get into for the rest of my life. although i said that about the GNR and ended up signing straight up for another half marathon 2 weeks later and beat my time

whats the bike situation like to do an amateur triathlon? am i looking at having to buy a £1000 road racing bike?

the swimming and running i'll be fine with, do at least 1x 10km run per week and swim a mile in the pool once per week - just need get some practice in open water which i imagine will be a shock to the system, but i'll probably start going to the free sea swimming club at Faustos down roker on a sunday morning in the new year

Ah yes the old bike conundrum! My very first tri was an enticer (250 swim, 7km bike, 2km run). I did the bike leg on an old hybrid mountain bike that I had lying around. Shortly after that I bought a road bike which cost me $1000 (about £500). This did me well enough to train on and to do my next tri which was another enticer. That was an aluminium frame with carbon forks and a Sora 9 speed groupset. I continued on that bike for a few years but realised that I wanted a better one which I bought in 2014. I had also registered for my first Ironman and half Ironman so realised I needed/wanted a TT bike as well. Basically what I’m saying is that if you plan to continue in triathlon then you will do well to get the best you can afford. I train on my road bike but switch to the TT about two months out from a tri, just to get used to the different position.
As for the swim. Get yourself a wetsuit. And by wetsuit I mean a triathlon wetsuit. The North Sea is cold at the best of times. I have an Orca which suits my swimming style - I swim like a brick. I couldn’t swim more than a hundred metres without blowing out of my arse when I first started. Listen to experienced swimmers and get tips from them. I wish I had taken notice of my dad who was nearly Olympic standard back in the 1960s. He tried to teach me as a kid but kicking a football was more important!
Hope that helps. I just did my last half Ironman on Sunday in Western Australia. It was bloody hot!
