The Irishman

Scorsese can make this stuff with his eyes closed. It’s formulaic and derivative. It’s money for old rope and something he knows he can “take to the bank”. To even mention this on the same internet as The Godfather is sacrilege. The Godfather is Julius Caesar this is a money-making exercise with little artistic merit but a lot of nostalgia for the participants.

That’s aside from the dodgy justification of glamourising the scum of the earth. It’s stereotypical boxticking shite for a new generation. Even the classic road-trip (more Hollywood invented bucket list bullshit. Who, as part of their real life has ever had reason to drive long distances, having adventures along the way which outshine the purpose and destination of the trip? Nobody it wasn’t a thing until it was in the fillums.) which is not mafia-standard, is thrown in there. Except they’re collecting extortion and protection money along the way. Groundbreaking stuff.

Not a fan then

Mark Kermode here.

Watched it over two days and loved the accuracy of actual events. Only downer for me was Graham's performance, accent and acting was no way near the level of the other 3, DeNiro, Pesci and Pacino. It showed how tough it must have been to run a business in those day. Gets a 9/10 from me.

I thought it was excellent, although admittedly I did split it into three parts.
Pacino was particularly brilliant and as far as I was concerned the CG was superbly done and not a distraction at all.

Thought he was excellent tbh, though he was acting with 3 greats.

Watched it last night. Excellent film. Very true to the book. Attention to detail was excellent. Typical Scorsese effort. Really well made, good soundtrack. De Niro, Pacino, Pesci all very good. Stephen Graham as Tony Provenzano was great as well, and the lad from The Wire playing Tony Salernon was spot on.
If people aren't fully up to speed on mob history, watching it without any background, they may not get bits of it such as Joey Gallo attempting to take out Joe Colombo, then the hit on Gallo.

However I thought it was absolutely fantastic.

I thought it was really poor. It just isn’t there yet. Having said that, someone has to pioneer it and in about 10-15 years I think that technology will look good.
Maybe some of us aren't so easily fooled. The CGI of Carrie Fisher in the last Star Wars had people waxing lyrical about it but for me it was canny shite.

Like you say they'll get it right eventually but at the minute they're showcasing new technology.
