Getting made redundant

Can I ask you clever lads (no sarcasm or bitterness intended) what jobs you did that enabled you to retire at 50 with good pensions?

Saved money, acquired assets that pay, reduced liabilities that cost. Pooled his and hers moneys, monitored invoming and outgoings regularly. Saved a salary a month between us for some years. Don't act like a dick..getting debt etc!

After 31 years, I am getting my redundancy notice next week
They decided that 2 people could do the work of 4, so we were asked to apply for the 2 roles, the one closest to my current role is 6k less, the other one about 2k less, I didn't apply for either, My line manager phoned in a panic to tell me I was missing the application deadline and I told him " I would resent working harder for less money and didn't think that would be fair on the company.
I've about 2 1/2 years until my pension starts, with my redundancy money and savings I will have the same income as now with a bit to spare.then with my private pension I can easily live to my current standard so it wasn't a difficult decision.
I'm looking for something to entertain myself, got grandkids that keep me smiling, a wife (no) to spend a lot more time with, I fish for a hobby.
What did my fellow seniors do when they finished work?

enjoy yourself. youll find plenty t do to occupy your time. believe me. youll wonder how you found time to work.

I'm 70 next year and been fully retired for 10 yrs. work pension and state pension gives me £2200 pcm clear. Started pension fund aged 19 yrs and now reaping the benefits.

I've worked with the public all my life, don't know anything else, I do know I won't work in retail again,
I think stacking shelves overnight in a supermarket would be great but those jobs are as rare as Hens teeth
Do you have any particular passionate interests? Maybe get into a niche, research it and write a book?? Or just make up a fiction book and wait for the calls from Hollywood.

I’ve got an idea for a novel on the back burner. As soon as I have some more time I’m going to get it written. If it gets made into the film and I get a modest deal I’ll be retiring to do the things I want to do.

I’ve been retired about 8 yrs now after taking voluntary redundancy at 57from a job with was very demanding...10/12 hr days 30,000 miles a year travelling ......I just enjoy not having that in my life...I have never ever regretted it....I do a fair amount of travelling...sitting in 20 degree heat as I type....you can be flexible with travel arrangements to get the cheapest fares...70quid return to Spain...when I’m at home I do voluntary work...I’m always available to help family out ...Never get bored...JUST ENJOY THE FREEDOM.....it’s always good reading about people having to go out and scrape the ice off the car etc on cold morning

holidays without email/texts/calls.

thats the no 1 thing id relish.

I mean it aswell .

makes me laugh young boys who are looking forward to retiring on a healthy pension at 55 /60.eye mate your 35 and wishing your an old man so you can sit in the house ,how bad must your life be .

(not you personally you know what I mean )
Utter bollocks man.
Youre picturing old boys with a flat cap on sitting in the house/workies clubs etc.

Plenty early 50s blokes are now fit as a fiddle, in the gym often, golfing, travelling, living a young lads life.

My business gives me a little freedom but id fuck it off in a heartbeat if I had the finances required.

So a lad 30 year old wanting to be 55 /60 so he can retire is a healthy state of mind .That type of mentality Makes no sense and it’s generally from people who are floating through life

No thats not my point really.
You should try to enjoy every day possible when grafting etc or its hell.

not saying you should just want to kill 20 years mate but who wouldnt bring that dayforward if possible?

rather than ‘counting the days’ so to speak.

I love my job, it’s well paid, I’ve invested in a rental property and also extra into super

I’m aiming to sell up in 8 years, take the money and move to somewhere cheaper so summer home in France and winter in Canada

If all my investments doubled tomorrow I’d be off, nothing to do with wishing life away, anyone who says they would rather be working than travelling or relaxing is a wrong un

Have you ever thought that those young lads might, just might, want to do what they want to do, rather than doing what some fucker else wants them to do, work is a means to end, If you can afford not to work, then life becomes fantastic, more so if you're only 30, pleased I'm retired and fit enough to enjoy it, it's f***ing great...

It's worked out quite well for you. Enjoy!!!

Do you have a bit money left over at the end of the month you could start putting in?

Yes. Have never really trusted or more to the point known what to do with one. Will look in to it. Anything to avoid? How much talking to put in from now to be comfortable say?

Go for walks, go for bike rides - gets better as you get fitter.
Read - great to be able to have a few uninterupted hours with a good book.
A bit gardening, jobs around the house. I created a small workshop in the cellar and got some decent tools together - makes all the differance.
Not really volunteer work, but I do a bit to keep the village tidy.
Meet up with freinds. Might not work for you but I've got mates that are retired, so we have days away together to museums or exhibitions or just places of interest. Sometimes using public transport, cheap train tickets etc. Just the fellas, had some great days out.
Shopping and/or browsing becomes a lot less stressful when you can do it off-peak.
Also, if you have kids you'll no doubt get roped in to helping them in some way.

Been retired for a few years, I can honestly say I've never been bored.
