Getting made redundant

Nah, it’s just laziness really. No need for anyone to retire at 65 these days, the state will increase the age to 70 soon enough.

Some people are used to a certain level of business and find it hard when that drops off.
I'm not even close to lazy and regular work 10-16hr days but if I could retire at 39 of course I would.

After 31 years, I am getting my redundancy notice next week
They decided that 2 people could do the work of 4, so we were asked to apply for the 2 roles, the one closest to my current role is 6k less, the other one about 2k less, I didn't apply for either, My line manager phoned in a panic to tell me I was missing the application deadline and I told him " I would resent working harder for less money and didn't think that would be fair on the company.
I've about 2 1/2 years until my pension starts, with my redundancy money and savings I will have the same income as now with a bit to spare.then with my private pension I can easily live to my current standard so it wasn't a difficult decision.
I'm looking for something to entertain myself, got grandkids that keep me smiling, a wife (no) to spend a lot more time with, I fish for a hobby.
What did my fellow seniors do when they finished work?

well done and well done for having principles.
enjoy your retirement.

All the best for a long and happy retirement.

They still show Last of the Summer Wine during the day on Gold, don't they? 😊

I know there's plenty of places up and down Britain that do walking football. It's canny fun. I do that semi-regularly to make sure my worn out hips get some exercise and to ward the arthritis off. My local rugby club does walking rugby, too.

Walking football and walking rugby. I've never heard of that.
To the OPer, if you've done a job with little activity, then retirement shouldn't have much negative affect on you. But i did a heavy manual job, and went from that to sitting around at home. Started putting weight on. As long as you have a hobby to occupy yourself, their should be no negative affect. Enjoy not being ruled by an alarm or time clock.

Sounds like a terrible and stressful situation mate. Pleased you’ve controlled it as much as you can.

I’d look at it this way, some people make all sorts of retirement plans and leave it as long as they can - then God or their health ruins the plans they had.

Your hand has been forced and it sounds like your going to be able to do what you want!

Enjoy it!

I needed a part time job to ease the transition into full retirement, I couldn't face a sudden move from full on, 6 days a week to zero, so I worked 3 days a week for a while on a self employed basis. In that time, I started travelling to places in the world I had always wanted to see and now I've finished work completely, but still travel to far away places 3 times a year.

I don't do much new, I just do everything slower. I walk to most places instead of taking the car.
I'm the stand in carer for my grandchildren, picking them up from school and looking after them until their parents finish work, which is a real joy.

I'm stress free and healthier than for a long time.

Enjoy!

I am past the retirement age but still work for myself. I will probably do this for as long as I can. Apart from the dosh, I generally enjoy the work it is appreciated by others.

Sounds ideal . Keep yourself fit and busy with whatever work stopped you from doing and enjoy the freedom. Get a dog or help the police out as a puppy walker and love every bit of it

Write a book and self publish it, learn a language in a year, help those less fortunate with voluntary work

Leave the UK it's a shit hole ,you won't like the forthcoming sunlit uplands either

Enjoy his life, take up a hobby, get a pet, travel, do things he enjoys. Imagine coming home to your wife 'hi love, that's it finally I've retired. Brilliant, what are you going to do ? 'get a job.

No but hes at the point he can afford to retire which is the best of both worlds.

why don’t you just say,’Sorry lads I don’t know what I’m talking about’ and go and make a cup of tea or summit?

I’ve been retired about 8 yrs now after taking voluntary redundancy at 57from a job with was very demanding...10/12 hr days 30,000 miles a year travelling ......I just enjoy not having that in my life...I have never ever regretted it....I do a fair amount of travelling...sitting in 20 degree heat as I type....you can be flexible with travel arrangements to get the cheapest fares...70quid return to Spain...when I’m at home I do voluntary work...I’m always available to help family out ...Never get bored...JUST ENJOY THE FREEDOM.....it’s always good reading about people having to go out and scrape the ice off the car etc on cold morning
