Thinking of joining as my fitness is frankly abysmal! Never been a gym member before but was wondering if anyone uses this place?

If so whats it like? Is it worth the money

I'm an member of the one in Jesmond.

Things to be aware of

It's expensive.
It's a 12 month contract with a 3 month notice period.

If you've not been a regular to a Gym i'd recommend signing up somewhere cheaper and with no a smaller notice period to ensure you're going to stick with it.

We get best use of our membership as they have classes on for children at the same time of some of the adult classes. We can leave our daughter doing things she enjoys while we can go and work out.

I'm sure it's something like 50 odd quid a month at the Doxy park one. Mental.

Shame like cos i could walk there in 5 minutes.

I joined the one in Dundee 3 weeks ago and I think it’s great. The gym machines are a bit old but I never use them anyway - their Olympic weights, barbells etc are nice and shiny and new and I’ve really been enjoying the Synrgy circuit classes.

The kids clubs are great, (Saturday and Sunday mornings drop them off at either 10 or 11, go for a workout then pick them up) and the place has quite a community feel to it.

It’s also directly across the road from my house so it’s only slightly less handy than my old garage set up.

If you don’t live nearby, play racquet sports or have kids I’d probably recommend going somewhere smaller/cheaper.

Are you sure? Do they do regional pricing?

My wife and I are on the “posh” membership with racquet sport access and complimentary towels and we are less than £50 each.

Sure my mate pays about £70 a month for the one with all classes, tennis, squash etc.
Very possible mate. I just know it's far more expensive than other gyms of a similar nature. I go to Xercise4less and it costs me £9.99 a month and it has pretty much the same exercise and weight gear as David Lloyd just none of the pool/sauna carry on. Mental how much more people are prepared to pay for a seemingly slightly more classy experience when all you are doing is building up a sweat for an hour or so.

Mind you, I'd get one for Seaham Hall if I could afford it like.

I'm sure they do a discount for couples memberships but nigh on 100 quid a month for the 2 of yous to do some exercise is still pretty steep imo. Still sounds on the low side for the one round here.

As I said before, if my personal circumstances were different I’d use a cheaper gym.

All the budget gyms are in the city centre so not practical for our current situation (2 kids under 6 living in the suburbs both working full time) - a 45min workout would mean being out of the house for about 2 hours when you consider getting into town, getting parked up etc. Whereas when it’s not pissing down I run over to DL and my quickest time so far is 1:21 (slowest is 1:44 depends on how busy the main road is).

The gym, especially free weights, are never very busy. There are 3 squat/power racks and there’s always at least 1 free, even on a weekday evening and at 11AM Saturday. I was a member of DW then Puregym pre-kids and they had 1 and 2 squat racks respectively and even at 6AM it was a nightmare to get one - I still get flashbacks about the occasional times I went in the evening.

There’s also much more of a social focus at DL than the budget gyms.

With the savings from stuff for the kids (my son losing his spot at Rugbytots is what encouraged us to go check DL out) it covers their memberships and some of ours. Rugbytots was about £6 a week for 1 session whereas my son does 3 classes a week included as part of his membership fee (£20 a month), which also doubles up as free childcare while we use the gym (although I can’t believe the number of parents who write “cafe” in the “where will parent be” section of the sign in form). My daughter decided last week that she prefers the DL Kids Clubnight on a Friday evening to her current football training so that’s £4 a week saved plus the Annual fee on top. They are currently £9.50 each a week for swimming lessons, and when their current block finishes we’ll switch them to DL at £6.35 a week each so that’s £6.30 a week saved. I’d also been considering rejoining my old badminton club but DL does a social badminton night thing as part of membership - that’s £30 annual subs and £4 a week saving.

It clearly works for you mate so happy days.

He tries to justify it by giving me his guest pass once a month for a free game of squash and having a swim once a week. I'll stick to my £20 PureGym membership and pay £5 when I fancy a swim once a month tops

Like you say, the mindset that it's the best option when there are other gyms in the area which are so much cheaper is crazy (to me anyway).

Anything is worth the money to the right person.

I love going to the gym so pay a bit more for one that has loads of equipment and isnt filled with absolute riffraff. If you are new to training you need to consider how much you are going to use it. If you have loadsa money and you will not miss the money coming out of your account then go for something plush. It you are live a bit of a tight ship with regards finance try something cheaper, you can always upgrade after a year (depending on contract) if you make a habit of it.

I used to pay 50 quid a month about 10 years ago there (can't remember who owned it then). I used to go alot so didn't mind at the time but you really need to be goi g about 5 times a week to get your moneys worth.

Doxy is £60 basic, prices going up by at least a fiver in January tho. If you want rackets on top it will be at least £70. Think I'll sack mine off in Spring, there 3 times a week but hate gym work really, might look for cheaper option or fitness classes. Some nice scenery in there the odd time, gets v busy tea times, quiet on other times. They seem to take their time getting sauna, steamer, Jacuzzi fixed, wouldn't happen down South. I think it is expensive for what it is but I suppose they trying to keep riff raff out, some still get in tho

When I used to go the treadmills were directly behind the Cross trainers which usually meant a nice view.

I find lots of the young lasses have been getting into weight training the last few years. I guess a well built arse is the latest fashion. I think thats probably the one decent contribution the Kardashaisns have made to humanity; making my gym sessions that bit more enjoyable.
I am bloody expert in tactical mirror use. Angles McManus has got nothing on me.

I pay £30 per month for raich carter centre, mainly because its closest to my house but that gets me unlimited gym, classes and pool. Pool is relatively empty after 8pm which is when I always go, loads of times I've had the entire pool to myself with a lifeguard watching me swim up and down. It's easy to lash out 50 laps when theres no biddies in the way. Gym is always practically empty and I do two classes per week, probably go there 15-20 times per month. Love it

David Lloyd is a bargain if you play a racquet sport more than once a week, as playing at Puma wouldn't be cheaper, plus you get all the other facilities. If you are just joining for the gym and/or pool it is expensive.
