We get thumped off a side struggling to keep its place in the league and haven’t beaten a team in the top half all season. As it is anything less than a 5-0 defeat would be a positive.

The problem now is that opponents know they have Sunderland’s card marked. High tempo and energy and they can overrun the midfield and defence. Game plans like Scunthorpe become the template to repeat.
