RR Podcast: With Paul Reid & Charlie Methven - submit your questions/topics to discuss

Methven said Parkinson was appointed because he kept Colchester in the championship despite never managing Colchester in the championship.

Methven said we are competing with PL teams at u23 level when the majority are championship clubs.

Reid said the u18's and u23's keep losing because they moved an u14 into the u16's.

People have criticised the interviewers for not picking up on things like this. Don't think I've seen anyone booting off though.
Interesting.

I admit to not finding much fault with what they had to say in this podcast, but I hadn't really questioned any of those things myself.

FWIW though, I think some of the context he put the U23 and U18 results in does make quite a bit of sense. And it stands to reason that kids will go to Premier League clubs.

There's a parent of one of those youth kids on this thread u happy that Methven is misleading us that the kids are being poached by their new friends away with England as well which I forgot to mention on my last post.

It's hard to find fault about things we don't know but when the things we do know about are found to be untrue, it's difficult not to question the rest.

Top and bottom of it is the owners wouldn’t come on the podcasts if difficult questions were asked. Which owners would?
So what's the point? They don't show 'openness and honesty' from the owners, it doesn't show a 'reconnection with fans' or mean 'we've got our club back', it doesn't mean any other shite that Charlie's PR bollocks tries to tell you either.

The concern is that it speaks to either a desire to mislead or a lack of basic understanding. Neither is particularly palatable.

I hadn't really stopped to question it to be honest. It was more this idea of 'weakening' the U18 and U23 sides in order to get certain lads playing grown up football that I was interested in - it puts results in those age categories into a bit of context, and I've long been critical of the U23 game.

This whole thing about kids being poached though - true or not, it wouldn't surprise me if the kids themselves and the parents aren't angling for moves to bigger clubs. How these moves comes about and what goes on at training camps etc doesn't particularly interest or bother me, but I'm certain kids and parents will opt for the higher placed club at times.

The trouble I find, is that the longer we're in League 1, the longer that scenario will play out, and this is the problem. We're potentially wasting millions running a category 1 academy at this level - something Methven did acknowledge. And although he says they've taken the decision to spend that money to maintain that status, it concerns me slightly that he's planting the seeds to say well actually it's a waste of time and money to do so until we're out of this mess - but that's me being cynical.

Now I've been critical of Donald and Methven plenty of times before and I wouldn't trust them to tell me the right time. I've also been critical of RR as well. The point on Parkinson's spell at Colchester is a tad damning - though he made that comment as "a punter". He had a point about Bolton though. We can pick apart the appointment all day long (wasn't my choice) but you can see it made sense in a lot of ways. So yeah, maybe they should have have probed his answers a little more, but this is what the bloke does for a living. And as much as I'd like him to be really challenged and squirm a bit, I'm not sure now what purpose that would even serve.

Sorry mate, Parkinson made no sense what-so-ever!

Really good post mate. I have to be honest, and expect criticism for it, I'm not too sure why we're persisting with a cat 1 academy in this division. If it means we can get good kids in, do great at u15 level but then the really good ones get picked off by Liverpool and the likes and we get next to nothing for them then it seems absolutely pointless. He said it costs about £2m a year to run, what he didn't say was how much less a cat 2 or 3 would be and what we'd actually lose. Almost sounds like we're staying at cat 1 for the prestige of it, to keep up appearances, as opposed to actually thinking it's financially prudent at this level. Similar to the premier concourse, if it isn't needed why pay for it? In that case they've shut it for now and intend opening later when it's worth the additional cost, is that not the right approach for the academy as well? Again though, I might be missing some key benefits of cat 1

My assumption is that it's probably less difficult to maintain Category 1 now than it would be to strip it all back and then have to build it up again at a later date. It's been my suspicion for sometime though that it will eventually be mothballed if things are to carry on as they are. Given the choice in the cold light of day I suspect a lot of fans would rather see £2m spent on Marcus Maddison than an academy that's produced 2 n a bit proper players in 16 years.
Sorry mate, Parkinson made no sense what-so-ever!
Managed in the division. ✔
Won promotion before. ✔
Knows the market. ✔
Available. ✔
Willing. ✔

What it might say about ambition and planning for the future and whatever else is one thing, but they're the facts and that's his CV. Again, he wasn't my choice, but you can see how those things would factor highly into the decision making process.

Why did you tell supporters that the money from FPP was investment when it was a loan using the stadium and the academy as security ?
are you at all surprised that making statements like that is creating mistrust?
