RR EXCLUSIVE: Charlie Methven discusses Sunderland’s investment, transfer window & scouting plans

Ill advised ? You agreed with them. You are kicking any fan who isn't towing the official line man ! The f***ing situation at our club isn't anything to relax about but like him you are using the hate card to dampen criticism !

I agreed with the content of the comments but I thought it was ill-advised to express them in public, especially at that time.

And yet again, you're mistaking a distaste for unpleasantness and aggression in the way the criticisms are expressed with a distaste for the criticisms themselves.

I'm not against criticism as a concept. I am however against unpleasant or aggressive criticism, and I am against criticism in situations where we I feel we don't have enough information to make a judgement.

Who on here is a PR guru who's career is based on making people think and believe what they want them to think and believe?

I work in advertising with such people and write copy designed specifically to induce emotion and desire to own something they really don’t need, so I can see his bollocks a mile off, it’s the very fact everyone else can barring wums like that lad, that prove how badly he’s doing it!

I don't think anyone's "accepting" mediocrity, some of us just choose to express their disappointment in different ways to others of us.

Criticism is one thing, but I don't think it gives weight to anyone's argument if they express that criticism in an unpleasant or aggressive way. That seems to be the point CM makes in the podcast, and I agree with him fully on that.

What about the argument we shouldn't sign Asian lads with brown skin because there is an anti immigration element in our city? Do you give weight to that and tarnish a whole city and fan base?

He's calculated and everything he says is deliberate. His constant comments demeaning our support (like scouts don't wear sheepskin coats), and their intelligence in particular is malicious. He's perfectly aware of the power of hyperbole and he's using it to his advantage. His now constant and repeated rhetoric of our fans being abusive is deliberate as this is what will be reported opposed to giving valid criticisms air time.

There's a reason he's here with his 4% share or whatever it is, and it's not because he knows how to turn us into the next Borussia Dortmund as he liked to claim when he first came here.

I wouldn’t mind but the performance of Safc under his directorship aptly demonstrates that he knows four fifths of fuck all about football. He can smarm as much as he likes but I could run rings round him when it comes to actual football knowledge - and I’m shite at the game:lol:

Just because his career is in PR, does that mean he stops being human?

When he's talking to the media in an interview he knows exactly what's he's doing and saying. He's done it's systematically and repeatedly. Charlton wasn't a one off. It's all the time.

'Sunderland are bigger then Newcastle'
'Sunderland should be in the premier league'
'100 points'
'best finances in the football league'
'don't need investment until we are back in the premier league'

'Sunderland fans have unrealistic expectations and need get real'

As fans we can only judge with what we are seeing home and away every week ! CM's constant mention of aggressive crticism is a clever PR ploy and it's designed to do what you are doing simply shoot down anyone who dares to criticise. Your put downs are often more aggressive than the crticism you prefer to pan !

The only hope I have of this quote from Methven saying the 'investment' is between Madrox and FPP is that it makes more sense to do it that way for SCMP.

Ie it's better to increase the turnover by 5 million this year and 5 million next year than increase it by 10 million this year then be stuck in the summer.

I doubt that will be the case though.
No i think you are spot on mate, its a way to give us wiggle room in jan

Listened to it before, Exactly as i thought it would be.

Methven is condescending & the interviewers didn’t make any challenge questions to his responses.

It doesn't matter how many times you say this, it won't make it true.

Both CM in the podcast and myself repeatedly on this thread have said there's nothing wrong with questioning or criticism, just do it in a civil manner, don't resort to unpleasantness or aggression.

his whole modus operandi is to spend no money, make a bunch of millions and when things aren’t going well he delfects by creating division amongst us. It is as plain as the nose on our faces mate. Bloke’s got Tory dripping out of every pore.

Have people actually listened to it?

I thought Reid spoke well, very honest and it makes you understand how difficult it is for the club to hold on to talented players. The U16 teams are all performing well, one age group U13s or U14s are national champions. Methven added that yes the results are not good at U23 and U18 level, however that's when our local lads if you will are beginning to compete against Premier League academies that have players playing for them from all over the world. He added that as a club they've made a decision to loan out our more talented players e.g. Robson, Diamond, Embleton etc. If they were all playing in our U23 side, if Hume was playing in the side also and Gooch etc. we'd obviously be winning more games, but ultimately it's not about that, it's about bringing on players that can contribute to the first team.

I know it's hardly groundbreaking, we probably already knew it, but it does highlight the difficulties the club has, regardless of who is running it and how much money they have.

It costs the club circa £2m each year to maintain the category one status.

Aye mate. See my post above. The likes of Hume, Robson & Embleton all played when the mags dicked us 5-0 last year

I totally see your point. We should have had a scouting network from day one. That's fine, but on day one we did have a scouting network, it was just shit and eating up money so it needed getting rid of.

Putting a new one in place would cost money, whereas they needed to balance the books to bring in investors to make us a better club long-term.

And so the scouting took a back seat while they brought in investors, which they've now done, and the first priority after securing the investment was to put a new, better scouting network in place.
We don’t have investors.

Theres cuts that rightly had to be made. There are things that should have been a priority, from day one of their ownership, and scouting imo was a priority. If they'd bothered to getting good scouting in place we may not have wasted 2 transfer windows on utter shit.

Worrying that the one thing they do seem adamant about is Coton and Hill keeping their jobs and being given more responsibility/backing.

Jobs for the boys.

It’s hilarious. The mags have had a fair few offers to buy them over the years regardless of how many of them stand outside the restaurant where Ashley is eating, how many of them suggest protesting at Ashley’s house or stand shouting at his shops - it’s widely claimed in the press the main thing stopping investors buying the mags is he’s asking too much money for them.

For methven to claim the reason they may not be able to sell is because of a couple of arseholes on Twitter who’ve allegedly slagged off the owner is disingenuous beyond belief and shows how little he thinks of the fan base.

They really can't handle any level of criticism can they? Asking them to account for themselves and their performance amounts to abuse in their eyes.

Disagree, he says on the Pod that the vast majority of Sunderland supporters have been fantastic, then lists off numerous examples.

He’s quite right to single out the minority of arseholes and there is nothing to suggest he has shoved these cretins in the face of potential investors as a common example of the fan base.

Well who is telling the investors about the minority? And why is he going on about the minority all the time? Any given opportunity he has a pop
