Why James McClean will never wear a poppy – and nobody else should be made to, either - The Independant

I saw a woman giving a young shop assistant behind the counter all sorts of abuse last year as she was the only one of the staff not wearing it, there were some very choice phrases. The girl looked like she was almost in tears, looked down at her front, apologised and bent down to pick it up from where it had fallen on the floor and returned it to her lapel. I will wear a poppy this year as always, but sadly there is truth in that article, and an element of fascism (dictionary definition, not Fascism) has in recent years entered the poppy tradition. It's a great pity.
The girl should have been more assertive.

Football clubs seem to be let off with their cynical marketing ploy of putting them on shirts, to sell as "limited edition", and up the retail price for them. I don't find profiting from Remembrance Sunday and Armistice Day particularly edifying.

Used to be that a vet would sit quietly outside a store or inside a pub and be charmingly nice when you donated. There was a real respect from everyone about what the weekend and the day meant.

We now see it used as political point scoring and commercial gain. It's heartbreaking to see this time of year spoilt in such a way.

People usually peddle this kind of shite to suggest James McClean isn’t a total wanker, which is obviously incorrect.

I'm not peddling any kind of shite.

There is an undercurrent of violent suggestions on this thread which proves I'm right.

Some people think everyone should show respect in the way they want them to or else. Deny it all you want, I'm not that arsed.

Your balaclava must be size XXL to fit all of your brains in. 🧠

Are they not selling them to donate to RBL? SAFC are auctioning off the match worn remembrance shirts for this purpose.

Are you pissed?

Their is one thing the article did get right and i agreed with the notion that the poppy has become a politcal symbol, certainly over the last 6 years its become more of an issue , its as if some have got the idea into their heads that come the end of october when outside on the street it's become like a uniform, which is expected that all wear it, the whole point of both world wars was fighting for freedom in all things.
